Zamalek edge out APR
Rwanda and APR's Olivier Karekezi
Olivier Karekezi's goal for APR was not enough against Zamalek
Egyptian giants Zamalek have edged Rwanda's APR 3-2 in Cairo in their first leg first round of African Champions League match.

The home side took the lead after 18 minutes through Jamal Hamza.

But the Rwandan side fought back at the end of the first half scoring twice through Jimmy Gatete and Olivier Karekezi two minutes later to take a 2-1 half-time lead.

The Egyptian side had the better of the second-half with Tamer Abdelhamid finding the net seven minutes after the break and then Hazem Imam grabbed the winner 15 minutes from time.

Zamalek will be hoping that they can avoid another shock exit from Africa's premier club competition after they surprisingly lost to Tanzania's Simba on penalties in 2003.

South Africa's Orlando Pirates have won 3-2 away to Saint Michel in the Seychelles.

Saint Michel took the lead in the second minute with a goal from Zablon Amanaka.

Pirates hit back with two goals through Benedict Vilakazi in the 23rd minute and a penalty converted by Edelbert Dinha in the 39th to lead 2-1 at half-time.

The South Africans extended their lead four minutes into the second-half through Behaka Phakatih.

Saint Michel had to wait until two minutes into injury time to pull one back through a header by James Bonne.

Malawian champions Bakili Bullets beat their Zambian counterparts Zanaco 1-0.

A 17th minute strike from Jimmy Zakazaka was all Bullets needed to silence the home crowd and control the proceedings at Sunset stadium in Lusaka.

But Zanaco coach Fighton Simukonda feels his team can still win the second leg in two weeks time.

"First of all, we didn't play well in the first half, we treated it casually," he said.

"But if they can beat us here, we can also beat them in Malawi."

His opposite number Kinnah Phiri is equally confident.

"We have seen their weaknesses and I don't think they stand any chance in Malawi if they can't beat us here."

Tunisia's Espreance have thrashed Sahel from Niger 4-0 in Monastir.

First round:

Results:
Zamalek (EGY) 3-2 APR (RWA)
Zanaco (ZAM) 0-1 Bakili Bullets (MAW)
St Michel (SEY) 2-3 Pirates (RSA)
Esperance (TUN) 4-0 Sahel (NIG)
