Manager Hassan Shehatta has been replaced |
The caretaker board of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has disbanded the country's Olympic team. The Pharoahs, yet to earn a point from their qualifiers, are currently at the bottom of their group.
Early elimination from the race to become one of the African representatives at the 2004 Athens Olympics has been a source of anger for Egyptians fans and was a major factor that led to the resignation of the previous FA board.
Their last two games are a home tie against Senegal and an away match against Nigeria.
After their 2-0 away loss to Tunisia at the El Menzah stadium in February, manager Hassan Shehatta announced his resignation while local clubs indicated that they will no longer release their players for Olympic duty.
The EFA decided that the national league will not be postponed to prepare for the remaining games, while European-based players will not be called upon.
Mohamed Aly, who will now take charge of the team, said he intends to build a new side for the future.
"I will call players who are less than 19 years old to play for this team," he said.
