Nigeria have improved their chances of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Athens after beating Egypt 3-0 on Saturday.

The former Olympic champions got two goals from Robert Akaruye to blank Egypt in a Group A tie played in Port Harcourt.

Akaruye scored five minutes before the interval and again in the 76th minute to put Nigeria in first place in the group.

Victor Ezeji added a third goal in injury time for the Nigerians, who won the gold medal at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

In Dakar, Senegal stayed alive in the group by holding Tunisia to a scoreless draw.

In the last round of matches in two weeks, Nigeria will visit Tunisia with the winner claiming the qualifying berth.

Senegal must beat Egypt by a heavy score and hope that the Tunisia and Nigeria game ends in a draw.

From Group B, defending Olympic champions Cameroon could become the first team to clinch a spot if they beat Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

Cameroon's chances have been further enhanced on Saturday after third-placed Ivory Coast defeated Mali 2-1 in Abidjan.

In the other group, Ethiopia host Morocco and Angola face Uganda at home.

The four group winners at the under-23 tournament will play at the Olympics in Greece in August.
