Diouf will hope to shine for Senegal at Tunisia 2004 |
Senegal coach Guy Stephan has named a Nations Cup squad containing a fair few surprises.
Stephan's definitive list includes many of the biggest names in African football, including two-time African Footballer of the Year El Hadji Diouf, one of the continent's best goalkeepers in Tony Sylva, flying attacker Henri Camara and powerful midfielder Pape Bouba Diop.
However, there are two notable absentees from a group that will be among the favourites to win the Nations Cup.
That Khalilou Fadiga is missing should shock no-one for the Lions' playmaker has heart problems that have stopped him playing since last season.
Yet Amdy Faye's absence is more puzzling.
The Portsmouth midfielder has been in fine form for his debut season in the English Premiership, and has established himself as a key player for the Teranga Lions.
However, a niggling knee injury seems to have deprived him of a trip to Tunisia in national team colours.
One player who will be attending the Nations Cup, even though he has never played for Senegal, is Lamine Sakho.
Sakho has played for the French under-21s but, like Freddie Kanoute, appears to have changed nationalities, taking advantage of Fifa's new rule change.
Sakho is a talented attacker who has never quite fulfilled his enormous potential.
When he played at Lens, alongside four regular Senegalese internationals, Sakho was described by teammate Diouf as 'the most Senegalese of all of us'.
Sakho is the son of a Senegalese international and is currently on loan at English side Leeds United from French giants Marseille.
