The Ivory Coast's Arouna Kone battles with Mexico's Joel Huiqui |
The Ivory Coast have continued Africa's good start at the World Youth Championship with a 2-1 win over Group E rivals Mexico. Adolph Tohoua and Arouna Kone scored the goals for the Ivory Coast's under-20 side.
Tohoua's goal came in the 19th minute as he shot home after a pass from Jean-Jacques Gosso.
Kone then extended the Africans lead, 13 minutes after the break, from the penalty spot, after Antonin Koutouan was obstructed by Mexico's Ricardo Jimenez.
The Mexicans managed to pull a goal back with five minutes left on the clock, when a cross from Ignacio Torres was headed home by Aldo de Nigris.
Mexico's coach Eduardo Rergis praised his opponents after the match.
"The Ivory Coast is a great team that performed better than us, although we improved in the second half," he said.
In the other Group E encounter on Saturday, Ireland beat Saudi Arabia 2-1.
The Ivory Coast's next match is on Tuesday when they take on the Republic of Ireland
