Bartlett has an impressive record with South Africa |
South African striker Shaun Bartlett has retired from international football in a bid to win a new contract at English Premiership club Charlton. The forward, who scored 27 goals in 66 appearances for his country, is out of contract at the end of the season and is keen to secure a fresh deal.
"I'm in the last year of my contract and am playing for a new deal," said Bartlett, who is 31 on Friday.
"I've spoken to the South African authorities and explained my decision. I told them it was time for me to concentrate on my club career. They tried to talk me round but I'd already made up my mind."
Bartlett has been involved in a number of club-versus-country rows and would have missed several games through his involvement in South Africa's African Nations Cup campaign early next year.
