Ghanaian league clubs are planning a takeover of the country's premier league from the 2005 season.

Kojo Fiano, the administrative manager of the Ghana League Clubs Association (Ghalca), told the BBC Sport website that his members feel they would do a better job of managing the competition and attracting needed sponsorship.

Fiano said the poor management of the league by the Ghana Football Association's professional league board has left his members with no option but to take charge of their own destiny.

In Fiano's opinion, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is overwhelmed by its responsibility to the national teams and has little time for the proper management of the league.

"The FA looks after the national teams and it is also the same body that is supposed to look for sponsors for the league," said Fiano.

"We feel that has not helped Ghanaian football. Clubs who are directly involved in the league would be more committed to the administration of the league."

Ghalca's decision to mount a takeover bid was reached after a recent study tour of South Africa, where they observed how that country's Premier Soccer League was run.

The GFA failed to secure a sponsor for last year's championship and had difficulties before securing sponsorship for the current campaign.

But people opposed to the idea of the clubs organising the premier league claim they have done little to prove that they are capable of doing a better job than the GFA.
