Zumdick is confident of success

Ralf Zumdick believes his knowledge of Ghanaian football will be vital when the Black Stars take on Somalia in a 2006 Nations Cup and World Cup qualifier in October.

Ghana's new coach, who was in charge of last year's African Cup Winners Cup finalists Asante Kotoko, told BBC Sport website that he had enough experience to revive the West African country's ailing fortunes.

"I think my experience will help me a lot," said the 43-year old German.

"I know a lot of Ghanaian players from my time here and in Europe."

But Zumdick admitted that the task of rebuilding the Black Stars will require a lot of hard work.

"We're now at a very low level. I know we have a long road to travel but it's possible for Ghanaian football to reach high standards again.

"The most important thing is to get the right balance between players who feature in the local league and those who play outside.

"We also have to build a side that has a winning spirit," Zumdick said.

Critics of Ghana's FA, including former international Tony Yeboah, argue that national coaches have not been given enough time to implement their programmes.

They have also voiced concern at the three-month contract given to Zumdick.

But the German coach said he is not worried about the short-term deal he signed last week.
