Ziese failed to earn a Nations Cup ticket |
Ghana have sacked national coach Burkhard Ziese, ending weeks of speculation over the future of the German. The 59-year-old had been in charge for just four matches.
A statement released by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said Ziese's dismissal was triggered by the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2004 Nations Cup finals.
The GFA described Ziese's performance as "poor and unacceptable."
This is the second time that Ziese has been fired as Ghana coach.
He was controversially removed in 1991 after successfully leading the Black Stars through the qualifiers for the 1992 Nations Cup in Senegal.
But he returned to the West African country in March this year to end Ghana's lengthy search for a foreign coach.
While the German was at the helm, he persuaded Bayern Munich defender Sammy Kuffour to return to the national side for the first time in a year.
But in his four games in charge Ziese led the Black Stars to three defeats and one draw.
In what was one of the biggest shocks in Nations Cup history, the four-time winners of the trophy lost their last match away to Rwanda.
