Badru will lead the Taifa Stars against Kenya

Hafidh Badru has been named as the new manager of Tanzania's national team.

He replaces Mshindo Msolla, who resigned after failing to guide the Taifa Stars to the 2004 Nations Cup finals.

Badru will be assisted by the former Tanzania international Charles Boniface Mkwasa.

His first task is to get the country past Kenya's Harambee Stars in October's preliminary qualifier for the 2006 Nations Cup and World Cup.

"Hafidh has sufficient experience and we believe he is the man suitable for the job," said Mwina Kaduguda, secretary-general of the interim committee of the Football Association of Tanzania.

Badru was Msolla's assistant during the 2004 Nations Cup qualifiers and managed Zanzibar's national team when they won the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in 1995.

Kaduguda said the new coaching pair had been given short-term deals to lead the national team but declined to state the duration of their contracts.

The FA said a long-term contract could be offered to Badru and Mkwasa if the Taifa Stars reach the group stage of the joint 2006 qualifiers.
