Vingada decided to replace Hassan and Hazem Emam after both players failed to score against the Saudis.

Although Hassan was replaced by the promising new signing Sameh Youssef in the second half, the match remained goalless.

The Egyptians won the match 2-1 on penalties.

One of Egypt's best known forwards, Hassan has not been immune from controversy.

His decision to join Zamalek from arch-rivals Al Ahly in 2000 cause shockwaves in the domestic league.

Known for his volatile temparament, Hassan has been involved in several disputes with previous managers of Ahly, Zamalek and the Egyptian national team.

In 2002, Hossam and his twin brother Ibrahim were suspended by the previous Zamalek coach Carlos Cabral.

The pair had refused to attend regular training sessions and disobeyed other club regulations.
