Marimo is impressed by Kawondera |
Zimbabwe manager Sunday Marimo is looking to young players for inspiration as he begins his task of building a side for the 2004 Nations Cup finals.
"I think we need to inject a few youngsters from the Under-23s into our team for the Nations Cup," said Marimo.
The coach has already drafted six Under-23 players into the senior squad that will play South Africa in a Cosafa Cup quarter-final on 19 July.
Players invited include striker Shingi Kawondera, who plays in Cyprus, Polish-based defender Dixon Choto and midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha, from Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa.
Although Zimbabwe have qualified for their first ever Nations Cup final, the team lacks depth in several departments.
In their final qualifier against Eritrea, there were no suitable replacements for key strikers Benjani Mwaruwari and Adam Ndlovu.
And with captain Peter Ndlovu considering retiring from international football before Tunisia, Marimo could have a hard task of preparing a credible Nations Cup team.
In addition, the junior teams have been through a particularly disappointing spell and may not be capable of providing the quality replacements needed for the country's campaign in Tunisia.
The Under-23 side failed to qualify for the All-Africa Games and were eliminated from the 2004 Olympic qualifying series by Ethiopia.
