Mboma is unhappy with management

Striker Patrick Mboma has opted out of Cameroon's team for the forthcoming Confederations Cup tournament in France because of 'poor management'.

"I have made this personal and painful decision to sacrifice my participation in the Confederations Cup, hoping that the managers [of the Cameroon team] will change."

A dejected Mboma refused to narrate the incident that led to his decision but told journalists on Saturday that he was not dropped for lack of form, as had been orginally suggested.

"After suffering from an injury last February I have regained my form. I was physically fit for the competition.

"But many things happened within the last ten days that made me change my mind," Mboma said.

He said officials of the ministry of sport, who handle the administrative management of the Indomitable Lions, were poor managers.

" We have all become professionals, but the management has remained amateur. We can't continue this way.

"Our coaches don't have a free hand in the choice of players. [Coach Winfried] Schafer is very frustrated by this attitude of the officials."

Mboma's decision follows that of Arsenal midfielder Lauren Etame Mayer, who blamed their poor performance at the 2002 World Cup finals on poor planning.
