Samuel Johnson has not played for Ghana for two years |
The new Ghana coach, Burkhard Ziese, has recalled Bayern Munich defender Samuel Kuffour to the Black Stars squad after a 14-month absence. Kuffour was invited along with his long time partner in central defence Samuel Johnson, who was axed from the team almost two years ago.
Johnson was a casualty in early 2001 after a humiliating 3-1 defeat in Accra against Liberia.
Kuffour has been included in Zieses side of foreign-based and home-based players for a four-nation tournament in Tunisia from March 28 to 30.
The Bayern defender was expelled from the Black Stars by the former coach Fred Osam-Duodu during the last Nations Cup in Mali for breaking camp rules.
Osam-Duodu and the Ghana Football Association had accused Kuffour of instigating other players in the side to stage a protest over the quality of the team's kit.
However, some other players said the Bayern international was kicked out for being outspoken.
After the squad to Tunisia was released yesterday, the GFA boss, Ben Koufie, was quoted by Ghanaian newspaper the Daily Graphic saying that the association will not interfere with the German coach's selection.
Former captain Charles Akunnor of German side Wolfsburg, who was dropped before the 2002 Nations Cup, has not been recalled yet due to injury problems.
Ziese has listed 22 foreign-based players to screen before Ghana's Nations Cup qualifier against Uganda in Accra in June.
Tunisia will host Ghana, Guinea and Cameroon in the tournament.
