 Yekini scored Nigeria's very first World Cup goal |
Former African Footballer of the Year Rashidi Yekini leads the goalscoring chart of the Nigerian Premier League. The 39 year old striker has scored four goals so far and is the first player to get a hat trick in this season's campaign.
He scored a hat trick for Julius Berger as they beat Kwara United 3-1.
The match was played in the western Nigerian city of Abeokuta.
Yekini brought his club level just before half-time with the successful conversion of a penalty before adding two more goals in the second half.
The forward is making a return to top class football after battling with injury problems for two years.
He was last with Ivorian club Africa Sports but never broke into their starting line-up.
Yekini played in Portugal witrh Vitoria Setubal, then Greece with Olympiakos Pireaus and in Spain's Primera division with Sporting Gijon.
"Ye-king" is best remembered for his much photographed celebration after scoring Nigeria's first World Cup goal - against Bulgaria in Dallas - in the 1994 finals.
Yekini was also the top scorer at the 1994 African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia, where Nigeria's Super Eagles won the trophy for the second time.
