| Thursday, 13 February, 2003, 14:24 GMT Coly 'scared' by pitch invasion ![]() Coly admitted the players were not very motivated Senegal star Ferdinand Coly has stated his belief that Senegal's friendly with Morocco on Wednesday night should not have gone ahead.
Coly told BBC Sport that his colleagues were badly affected by the pitch invasion. "We were a little scared when all the fans ran onto the pitch, and it was impossible to play," the Birmingham defender said. "It was very dangerous, and I think the game should have been cancelled." When the game finally began, the Lions made a good start to the Guy Stephan era, before crumbling in the second half. Coly believed their loss could be ascribed to the motivation: of the Moroccans players :eliminated from the 2002 World Cup qualifying race by Senegal, they were keen on revenge. "We had a good first half, a good beginning, and afterwards ,nothing!" he said. "Morocco had a big passion to beat us, and I think the result is logical. "The Moroccans wanted revenge from the World Cup, and we played it like a friendly game." Inspite of the defeat, Coly was impressed by his new coach, Guy Stephan. "He is a good coach, like Bruno Metsu, and I think Senegal will be better tactically with him." Stephan was similarly unconcerned by the result. His new charges came in for a lot of criticism from the Senegalese journalists present, but the technician was quick to defend them.
"Now we just have to get ready for the Nations Cup qualifier against Gambia next month." Morocco defender Abdelilah Fahmi was delighted with the victory. "It's always nice to win against Senegal," the Lille player said. "I think we played a good match for the Moroccan and Senegalese fans. "Our team was well organised, and we really gave a good performance. "For this group, which is a mixture of young guys and more experienced players, I hope that this match will give us confidence for the future." |
