The President of the Confederation of African football, Issa Hayatou and Cameroon's Sports Ambassador, Roger Milla, had a war of words over the Fifa election. Milla publicly backed Sepp Blatter against Issa Hayatou, saying the Swiss would be better for football in Africa and across the world. It was an embarrassment for Hayatou to have Cameroon's most famous footballer backing his opponent. Many Cameroonians were highly critical of Milla, saying it was a back-stabbing move against his compatriot. The peace-deal was apparently brokered by the chairman of Cameroon's National Olympic and Sports Committee, Colonel Kalkaba Malboum. Hayatou and Milla appeared in public in a government ceremony to officially endorse Colonel Kalkaba's candidacy for the post of President of the African Athletics Confederation. However, the two men were not seen exchanging any words in public, although they did sit side by side during the ceremony. "We are indeed happy to see Hayatou and Milla in the same ceremony. "We badly need them to work together to promote Cameroon's image abroad," remarked a senior sports official. | See also: 29 May 02 | History 09 Apr 02 | Africa 31 Mar 02 | Africa Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
