Galadima named NFA chief
John Fashanu
Fashanu stood down from the elections
John Fashanu has failed in his attempt to become chairman of the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) in Friday's election.

The post has gone to the unopposed Ibrahim Galadima, a sports administrator.

"The new NFA chairman is Ibrahim Galadima and he will serve in the capacity for three years," said election spokesman Muyiwa Daniel.

"Galadima was the sole candidate during the voting. All others returned their forms of interest and stepped down for him."

Fashanu, former NFA vice-chairman Chive Kaave, referee Dogo Yabilsu and sports administrator Sabo Jumba dropped out before the contest.

But the four will remain members of the 22-man NFA board, comprising representatives of the country's professional and amateur soccer clubs, journalists, referees, armed forces and coaches.

Fashanu became an NFA board member through his involvement with amateur club Shelter FC in south western Ogun state, the home of his Nigerian father.

The former Wimbledon striker, who was born in England and has lived there for most of his life, holds dual British and Nigerian nationality.

Sports administrator Galadima has built a reputation for successfully organising sports events.

He helped organised Nigeria's hosting of the 1999 world youth soccer tournament and is currently a vice-patron of the Nigerian Olympic Committee.
