Guy Stephan, a former assistant coach of France, is denying he has become the new coach of World Cup quarter-finalists Senegal.

The Senegalese FA on Friday said they had an agreement with Stephan that he would leave his post at the French FA, where he had a development role, and would join the Lions at the end of the month.

"We wanted someone who is not only a coach for the national side but also one who could develop Senegalese football from the grass roots", said the vice-president of Senegal 's FA, Bounama Gueye.

But later the same day Stephan said he had agreed to nothing.

The former coach of Lyon and Bordeaux admitted he had been approached and that he was interested, but that no deal had been done.

Gueye said the contract had not been formalised, but that Stephan was their man.

"The details still being discussed", he said. "We will announce soon exactly how much is involved and how long it is for, but we expect to build a long-term relationship"

Senegal have wanted to employ another French coach since Bruno Metsu led them to the final of the Nations Cup in Mali and the quarter-finals in Korea and Japan.

Metsu quit after the Senegalese FA refused to allow him to take a ten month break to coach in the United Arab Emirates.
