SA cruise to Cosafa Cup
South Africa battle with Malawi
The match was mostly confined to midfield
South Africa 1-0 Malawi (aggregate 4-1)
Cosafa Cup final, second leg

South Africa secured the Cosafa Cup for the first time with a 1-0 victory in Durban over Malawi, taking the trophy 4-1 on aggregate.

Benedict Vilakazi scored the only goal of the game, putting the final touch to a series of intricate passes in the 90th minute.

It was certainly the highlight of a match that lacked any sort of drama, as Bafana Bafana already had a 3-1 lead going into the game that the Malawians seemed unable to challenge.

Having made five changes, the Flames instead sought to play out a damage limitation exercise by crowding out the midfield.

South Africa celebrate with the Cosafa Cup
It was the first trophy for Ephraim Mashaba
Bafana Bafana striker Jimmy Kauleza hit the woodwork in the first half with a volley, but it was the only other notable chance in the match.

The trophy is the first success for new coach Ephraim Mashaba, in charge of only his fourth game since taking over from Jomo Sono after the World Cup.

"It was really fantastic to finally win this trophy and to do it with home-based players," said Mashaba, who now turns his attention to the African Nations Cup qualifiers.

South Africa's squad featured just two of the players from the World Cup finals in Japan and Korea earlier this year.
