Algeria stumble in Uganda friendly

Algeria 1-1 Uganda
Friendly, Annaba

Algeria's Desert Warriors were held to a 1-1 draw in Annaba, as Uganda's Cranes maintain their impressive form.

Despite missing midfielders Hakim Magumba, Phillip Ssozi and Alex Isabirye, Uganda put up a good display and opened scoring through Hassan Mubiru.

The striker, who scored two goals against the Algerians in 1999, capitalized on a defensive lapse to score in the 36th minute.

But Algeria, who were missing Marseille's Djamel Belmadi and Troyes' Nassim Akrout, fought back and got a goal just after half time through Adel El Hadi.

Hocine Azizane, who had failed to convert a great chance in the first half, was the provider and El Hadi slotted it past goalkeeper Abdul Salim.

Uganda suffered a setback when captain Timothy Batabaire was sent off in the 70th minute, after stamping on an opponent.

Algeria subsequently turned on the pressure but the Ugandan defence held on till the end of the encounter.

Uganda coach Paul Edwin Hasule was impressed with the progress that his team has made in recent weeks.

The draw follows an impressive 1-0 victory over Ghana in the opening match of their Nations Cup qualifiers.

"These build-ups are really helping us, and we need to keep together as a unit," he said.

Algeria's caretaker coach Hamid Zouba said that they should have won the game but missed several chances.

Algeria: Mohamed Samadi, Slimane Raho, Moulay Haddou, Small Diss, Redouane Akniouene, Salim Aribi, Farouk Belkaid, Karim Ghazi, Hocine Azizane, Bouabdellah Daould, Adel El Hadi.

Uganda: Abdul Salim, Phillip Obwin, Nestroy Kizito, Francis Gonzaga, Timothy Batabaire, Wasswa Bbosa, Richard Malinga (David Iga), Godffrey Sserunkuma, Fred Okello, Hassan Mubiru, Abubakar Tabula.
