Gillingham's African duo
Gillingham FC
Gillingham have been a mainstay of the English first division

Gillingham is not an English first division team where an African presence readily comes to mind.

But the Kent side had a great start to the season, with the help of a Cameroonian and Malian import.

Guy Ipoua and Mamady Sidibe have formed a partnership that could be vital to their promotion chances.

Ipoua has scored twice this year but Sidibe has not been as lucky.

In the Cameroonian's opinion, it is only a matter of time before the Malian breaks his duck.

"Mamady has been very quick to find his feet for someone coming from the third division," Ipoua told BBC Sport Online.

"He has been playing very well and was involved in my two goals."

International ambitions

Sidibe's early season form earned him an invitation to the Mali national team, which was a great source of joy to him.

"Everything went very well - the guys were very welcoming, and I scored a goal in a friendly against Monaco."

Guy on the other hand, has never played for his country.

But Samuel, his elder brother, has blazed the trail and it is a path that he is hoping to follow.

Club boss Andy Hessenthaler is confident that his African players will have a key role in their ambitions this season.

"They are a good combination and have done very well for us," he said.

The team's ardent fans will be hoping their African connection bring them lots of sporting luck.
