South Africa set to play England

Officials from the English Football Association are due to travel to South Africa later this month for a joint announcement on up to two friendly games.

A statement is due on 25 September regarding the exact match programme, which will take place after the end of the English Premiership season.

South Africa have already announced that they have agreed at least one game against England, but it is possible that the countries could play each other twice.

There are also plans for England to have a training camp in South Africa to prepare for a European Championship Group 7 qualifier against Slovakia on 11 June.

Holiday thoughts

That is a full month after the end of the Premier League season, a timetable that has angered England's coach Sven-Goran Erikson.

"I'm not happy at all," he said of the arrangements over the weekend.

"But we can't do anything about it because Uefa have listed the game like that. We are talking about having at least two friendly games in South Africa and a training camp in preparation," he said.

The England coach is concerned his player's minds will have already turned towards the summer break.

South Africa will use the England tour to prepare for their Nations Cup qualifier against Group 11 rivals Ivory Coast on the weekend of 20-22 June.

The South African Football Association is refusing to confirm the details until the planned press announcement later this month.
