Sylva gets chance at Monaco
Tony Sylva
Sylva was one of Senegal's heroes at the World Cup

Tony Sylva's long absence from first team action at French club Monaco is at an end.

In a pre-season press conference, Monaco boss Didier Deschamps revealed he is going to start the Senegal goalkeeper in their opening match of the season.

Sylva has never been a regular at Monaco, despite his sterling international form for the Lions. He only managed two games last season.

After being named best goalkeeper at the 2002 Nations' Cup and having an impressive World Cup in Korea and Japan, Sylva made it clear that he will not be satisfied with being a benchwarmer at Monaco.

"I need a club that respects me," the slight goalie said recently.

Sylva has a few weeks to translate his impressive international form into consistent performances for his club.

Monaco's number one keeper, Flavio Roma, is currently injured but Sylva could snatch his shirt if he makes the most of the opportunity that Deschamps has given to him.
