Egypt fall for Romania hoax
Egypt's national side
Were Egypt tricked into playing inferior opposition?
A Romanian second division side appears to have tricked Egypt's Olympic football team into playing them twice - instead of the proper Romanian side.

Tractorul Brasov allegedly donned Romania's national colours and pretended to be the country's Olympic squad for two matches played on Friday and Sunday.

Egypt won the second match 3-0, but incredibly lost the first to the obscure side by a 2-1 scoreline.

The Pro Sport newspaper made the allegations after seeing pictures from the match on Egyptian television.

The newspaper showed what it said was a photo from the match, with Tractorul players dressed in yellow shirts and blue shorts, Romania's national colours.

It alleged the scam was organized by Tractorul officials and an Egyptian businessman.

Tractorul officials denied the allegations of duplicity, claiming instead that their players only appeared in the yellow kit because their usual colours were too similar to Egypt's.

But Ion Moldovan, coach of the Romanian Olympic team, confirmed that his team had no part in the matches.

"There was a proposal to play a match between the two Olympic teams, but Romanian clubs did not agree to release players, and the match fell through," Moldovan was quoted as saying by Pro Sport.
