By Sam Lyon

2250: And that's a wrap my good people. Cracking night of football and a more than welcome distraction from events up and down the country, I'm sure you'd agree. Stay safe, folks, and join me - Sam Lyon - again tomorrow for an International Football-Carling Cup combo. You know you want to. See you on the flip side of the night.

Brad_y_Bunch on Twitter: "What an brilliant night! Credit to the Carling Cup and to the managers for putting decent teams out!! Over 100 goals!"

Everyone via text: "I have to say thank you for tonights coverage took my mind off the other events of the last few days."

alexrobnewton on Twitter: "I take my hat off to you! Now go get a well deserved cuppa!"

2240: Well well well... what a night of drama that was. Goals, red cards, drama, incident, shocks and Cupsets... it had it all didn't it? I can't feel my fingers.

2237: Notts County must score... Neal Bishop must score... MISSED! Nottingham Forest are through - somehow - 4-3 on penalties. Drama drama drama...

2236: Sudden death penalties now, and Luke Chambers... scores for Nottingham Forest...

2235: Lee Hughes runs up to win it for Notts County... and MISSES! Blazed over, shoot-out still going...

2234: George Boateng steps up for Nottingham Forest's fifth penalty... saved! If Notts County score their next they're through...

2233: The twists and turns continue at Nottingham Forest as Hamza Bencherif misses for Notts County - it's 2-2 in the shoot-out after three apiece.

2230: Nottingham Forest-Notts County the last match to finish tonight - and Jonathan Greening has missed the opening spot-kick of the shoot-out for the hosts. Advantage County...

2229: Carlisle are the latest to get through their penalty shoot-out, 4-2 at Oldham.

2227: Wycombe win their shoot-out against Colchester 5-4 to reach the second round.

2226: Sheffield United squeeze through with a 4-3 shoot-out win over Hartlepool.

2225: And Peterborough are also through, Darren Ferguson's boys winning 4-3 against Stevenage.

2224: Leyton Orient are through after winning 4-3 on penalties against Southend.

2223: That was the last kick of the game - and Nottingham Forest and Notts County go to penalties. Unbelievable.

2222: DRAMA!! Wes Morgan - a centre half by trade - has just smashed a sensational strike into the top corner from 22 yards out to salvage something for Nottingham Forest and it's 3-3 against Notts County. Unbelievable. The City Ground goes bananas and penalties surely loom.

2221: Peterborough and Notts County playing out the final seconds of what they hope are wins for them...

2220: Four matches have gone to penalties... Hartlepool-Sheff Utd, Oldham-Carlisle, Southend-Leyton Orient (currently 2-3) and Wycombe-Colchester.

2219: Injury-time winner! Surely! Lee Tomlin is the potential Peterborough hero, netting from the spot to make it 4-3 against Stevenage.

2218: Another full-time, Burnley 6-3 Burton Albion. Rochdale through, too, 3-2 against Chesterfield.

2216: And Stevenage-Peterborough looks to be heading to spot-kicks, too, as Chris Beadsley draws the League One hosts level 3-3 against Peterborough.

2215: Southend 1-1 Leyton Orient - that one goes to penalties.

d0nta5k on Twitter: "Hat-trick for 18-year-old Leicester striker Jeff Schlupp tonight - just hope too much pressure isn't put on him."

2208: Four matches - as it stands - heading for penalties.

2204: Rochdale lead for the first time tonight as Ashley Grimes bags his second of the game to make it 3-2 against Chesterfield.

2203: It's 'sixy football' (ey fank yaow) time for Burnley as Jay Rodriguez makes it 6-3 against Burton, who appear to have made the Championship outfit angry and are now paying the price.

RobertBodsworth on Twitter: "28 games, 100 goals, so far!!! Crazy days."

2158: And we're level too at Adams Park, Stuart Beavon firing in to make it Wycombe 3-3 Colchester. Penalties looming large up and down the country...

2157: Notts County lead at the City Ground! And it's a pearler from Lee Hughes, curling home an unstoppable strike to make it 3-2 at Nottingham Forest. Rochdale are back level in their game against Chesterfield thanks to own goal's hat-trick strike of the evening, Dwayne Mattis the guilty party on this occasion.

2155: Lullsville USA - so a reminder of your Championship casualties this evening: Barnsley, Coventry, Derby, Hull, Ipswich and Portsmouth. Cupsets.

2152: Colchester - 2-0 down at one stage - lead 3-2 at Wycombe thanks to Steven Gillespie's penalty.

2150: Hartlepool are down to 10 men for their extra-time against Sheffield United with goalscorer Antony Sweeney coming off with an injury, and Pools having made all their substitutes.

2149: Burnley have not taken too kindly to Burton forcing extra-time late on as Jay Rodriguez's hat-trick strike from range makes it 5-3, while George Boyd puts Peterborough 3-2 up against Stevenage.

2147: Early goal, too, at Spotland as a Danny Whitaker penalty makes it Rochdale 1-2 Chesterfield.

2146: No respite! Just a minute into extra time and Ross Wallace drills a stunner into the top corner to make it Burnley 4-3 Burton. Topsy-turvy.

2145: Eight games heading to extra time, then: Burnley-Burton, Hartlepool-Sheff Utd, Nottm Forest-Notts County, Oldham-Carlisle, Rochdale-Chesterfield, Southend-Leyton Orient, Stevenage-Peterborough and Wycombe-Colchester.

2143: And Brighton and Millwall also through...

2142: Bury, Leicester and Barnet also through...

2140: More full times - Scunthorpe, Morecambe, Bournemouth, MK Dons, Shrewsbury, Doncaster, Exeter, Hereford, Southampton, Northampton, Leeds, Huddersfieldand Preston through...

2138: Lyle Taylor makes it Bournemouth 5-0 Dagenham and Redbridge.

2136: Desperately late equaliser at Turf Moor! Burton complete the comeback to make it 3-3 against Burnley, Jacques Maghoma the scorer - that's heading for extra time. Late winner from Yoann Arquin for Hereford against Brentford, surely, it's 1-0 there. Andy Barcham wraps up Scunthorpe's win over Accrington, making it 2-0 - the same score Exeter now lead Yeovil by thanks to Chris Shephard's late, late strike.

2135: Full times coming in - Macclesfield, Middlesbrough through...

2133: Ah, shame. Daniel Devine's "fabulous" strike - which apparently took a massive deflection - has been accredited to Neil Mellor now. Anyway, it's Bournemouth 4-0 Dagenham and Redbridge, Lyle Taylor the scorer. Iain Hume puts Preston 3-2 up against Crewe in the dying stages, while Bury look to be on the brink of a surprise win over Coventry thanks to Ryan Lowe's strike - it's now 3-1 to the League One outfit.

2130: Burton aren't going out without a fight... Calvin Zola making it 2-3 at Burnley, the Championship side still through as it stands but Albion knocking on the door.

2129: Shock alert - Kevin Ellison has doubled Morecambe's lead on debut and Barnsley look to be heading out, 2-0 down as it stands.

2128: Is that Burnley through now? Charlie Austin scores to make it Burnley 3-1 Burton Albion.

2127: Oh that's divine. Literally. Fantastic strike from Daniel Devine and it's Preston 2-2 Crewe. Richard Chaplow meanwhile looks to have put Southampton through, they lead now 3-1 against Torquay. Michael Bostwick bags to make it Stevenage 2-2 Peterborough. Doug Loft's penalty gives Port Vale a glimmer of hope, Port Vale 2-4 Huddersfield.

2126: Deadlock broken at the Crown Ground - Chris Dagnall's penalty making it Accrington 0-1 Scunthorpe - while a fine volley from Anthony Sweeney makes it Hartlepool 1-1 Sheffield United. Lucky they got the floodlights working there because it's heading for extra time...

chris1ian on Twitter: "Surely one of these games can take us to penalties? Who doesn't love a penalty shoot-out?"

2124: Back level at the City Ground as Craig Westcarr turns and drills home from the edge of the area to make it Nottingham Forest 2-2 Notts County. Tense.

2123: Preston are hanging onto a place in the Carling Cup by their fingertips as only a fine save from Iain Turner prevents Crewe's Shaun Miller from making it 3-1. Hartlepool substitute Nathan Luscombe has a fantastic chance to equalise against Sheffield United, but fires over the bar despite having time and space in the box.

2122: Derby deficit reduced further as Theo Robinson scores to make it Derby 2-3 Shrewsbury. Bury lead against Coventry now - Ryan Lowe sliding home to make it 2-1 against the Championship side.

2120: Leeds lead! Ramon Nunez crashing home from all of about 18 inches after a defensive slip up and Bradford trail 3-2 at Elland Road.

2118: Ooh what a strike that is, Burton back in it at Burnley thanks to a fabulous solo effort - dribbling round three or four players - from Cleveland Taylor. Hat-trick from Jeffery Schlupp at Rotherham, his composed finish making it Rotherham 1-4 Leicester.

2117: By my calculations we're looking at eight matches destined for extra time at the moment. Fans of early finishes weep, fans of continued football commentary rejoice.

2115: Brighton - whose manager Gus Poyet won the League Cup with Tottenham in 2008 of course - lead 1-0 against Gillingham thanks to Ashley Barnes's penalty. Leeds level! Ross McCormack heading home Lloyd Sam's cross to make it Leeds 2-2 Bradford. Cracking game at Elland Road.

2113: Talking of breathing space (three in four updates...? Shame on me...) Leicester are 3-1 up against Rotherham thanks to Jeffery Schlupp's strike - and Burnley are 2-0 up against Burton thanks Jay Rodriguez's second, this time a penalty. It's Port Vale 1-4 Huddersfield, Gary Roberts the latest goalscorer. Peterborough lead! David Ball - that man again - bags a brace to make it 2-1 at Stevenage.

2110: Even more breathing space for MK Dons as Angelo Balanta fires home to make it 4-1 at Cheltenham - you'd have to think that's game, set and match.

2109: Guillem Baliza breaks the deadlock at St James Park to make it Exeter 1-0 Yeovil.Crewe still leading at Deepdale, meanwhile, but only just as keeper Steve Phillips makes a fine save to deny Preston striker Neil Mellor.

2107: Breathing space for MK Dons as Dean Lewington makes it 3-1 at Cheltenham.

2105: Nottingham Forest lead against rivals County, Andy Reid lifting a glorious ball from the left and Robbie Findley making no mistake, slotting home at the back post to put the Red half of Nottingham into a 2-1 lead.... and Doncaster are 3-0 up against Tranmere thanks to Kyle Bennett's strike. Leyton Orient are down to 10 men thanks to Jonathan Tehoue's red card. Elsewhere it's Oldham 1-1 Carlisle and Port Vale 1-3 Huddersfield thanks to goals from Jon-Paul McGovern and Jack Hunt respectively.

2102: From behind Leicester lead, Jeffery Schlupp trickling one over the line to make it 2-1 at Rotherham. Jay Rodriguez breaks the deadlock at Turf Moor from the penalty spot as Burnley lead Burton 1-0. Liam Feeney makes it 3-0 for Bournemouth against Dagenham and Redbridge, Emile Sinclair bags his second to make it Macclesfield 2-0 at Hull... and Bradford are back in front at Elland Road! Michael Flynn drills home from 20 yards and it's Leeds 1-2 Bradford.

2059: Make that five Championship sides trailing as Paul Turnbull makes the most of some shocking defending to put Northampton 2-1 up at Ipswich. Cupset o'clock.

2057: Calm before the storm... so many games in the balance...

2054: Goal at Oakwell as Danny Carlton puts Morecambe ahead against Barnsley with a close-range finish. That makes it four Championship sides behind, all of them at home. Middlesbrough suffering no such problems at Walsall as Marvin Emnes completes his hat-trick from the penalty spot to make it 3-0. That boy only had seven goals for Boro before tonight. He must be loving this.

2051: And it's good news, too, for Leeds as Ramon Nunez - on the back of good work from Lloyd Sam - slams in off the bar from 16 yards to draw them level against Bradford. MK Dons lead having trailed half an hour in as Jabo Ibehre scores to make it 2-1 at Cheltenham.

2049: Comeback on at Pride Park as debutant Chris Maguire heads home to make it Derby 1-3 Shrewsbury. Just the start the Championship outfit wanted - one in, two to go.

2046: Getting back under way, work to do...

2044: By the way, as if my commentary isn't fulfilling every need and desire you have this evening - which of course it is - don't forget you can also keep across all things Nottingham Forest v Notts County via the medium of the wireless with Radio 5 Live sports extra. Ace.

2039: By the way, some sterling Twitter updates from Brad_y_Bunch on Twitter, giving me a reet run for my money. Keep up the good work lad.

2036: Let's look at our potential 'cupsets' then shall we? Top of the pops is Derby-Shrewsbury with the League Two outfit leading their Championship opponents 3-0. Leeds, a goal down to Bradford, Hull, a goal down against Macclesfield, and Portsmouth, also a goal down - this time against Barnet - are the other Championship sides staring down the barrel of a Carling Cup exit, while Preston, heavily fancied in League One, are trailing 2-1 against Crewe at Deepdale. Any more for any more?

2032: Half-time whistles blowing up and down the country. Just the 44 goals so far - and that with six games still goalless. Frantic.

erjl1992 on Twitter: "The comeback kings of the season so far... Colchester."

dickiebowdunn on Twitter: "If Forest lose tonight I'll have to call a sickie tomorrow. Nature of illness: embarrassment."

2028: Equaliser for MK Dons at Cheltenham as Sam Baldock scores - and it's level, too, at Adams Park as Ian Henderson pings one in the top corner to make it Wycombe 2-2 Colchester. That's Henderson's fifth goal in three games - that's form, ladies and gentlemen.

2027: A Ben Tozer goal makes it Ipswich 1-1 Northampton - and the lights come on at Victoria Park, just as Antony Sweeney shoots narrowly over the bar for Hartlepool. Is it a sign? Sheffield United on the back-foot. Preston must hate the sight of David Artell in the first round of the Carling Cup, by the way - before scoring for Crewe tonight, he grabbed the winner for Morecambe at Deepdale in 2007. Menace.

2025: Crewe are ahead against Preston - David Artell the scorer - and Huddersfield are ahead at Port Vale thanks to Lee Novak's second. Paul Gallagher, meanwhile, restores something like order in the Rotherham-Leicester game with a leveller for the Championship outfit.

2023: Cupset-alert - Shrewsbury double their lead against Derby County through James Collins' strike. The Rams off their game tonight, no doubt. It's double delight for Bournemouth, too, as Shaun Cooper makes it 2-0 against Dagenham and Redbridge. And not wanting to be left out, Middlesbrough double their lead against Walsall through Marvin Emnes. Hold up - the Marvins only score in pairs - Marvin Morgan has his second to make it 3-0 to Shrewsbury at Derby now. Blimey.

2021: Mark Phillips scores and it's Southend 1-1 Leyton Orient, while Mark Hughes - not that one - puts Barnet, who haven't been knocked out in round one for 10 years, ahead against Portsmouth. It's Stevenage 1-1 Peterborough now thanks to Stacy Long, while Mark Pugh put Bournemouth ahead against Dagenham and Redbridge. That goal garnered fevered cheer in this office from someone. How nice. Andy Bishop, meanwhile, draws Bury level against Coventry.

2018: Goals in the big games - and upset very much on the cards in one - as Jack Compton's left-foot strike rounds off a fine Bradford move to put the Bantams up against Leeds. Over in Nottingham, Lewis McGugan draws Forest level against County with a fabulous free-kick.

2016: Luke Summerfield has his first of the season as his long-ranger is deflected in to make it Cheltenham 1-0 MK Dons, Stephen Quinn bags with a six-yard header to make it Hartlepool 0-1 Sheffield United and Lee Novak draws Huddersfield level at Port Vale. Ryan Mason - on loan from Tottenham - makes it 2-0 to Doncaster against Tranmere.

2014: Game on at Adams Park as Colchester pull one back against Wycombe, Kayode Odejayi's fine finish making it 2-1 to the hosts. Roy O'Donovan bags the first of the game at Bury as Coventry take the lead against their League One opponents.

2012: Gary Roberts slams home the opener to break the deadlock for Port Vale against Huddersfield, while a Reuben Reid penalty makes it Oldham 1-0 Carlisle. Middlesbrough are more comfortable than velvet pyjamas against 10-man Walsall.

Brad_y_Bunch on Twitter: "Quite a lot of cupsets on the cards so far Sam!! Derby, Hull, Forest, Leicster!!"

2010: There is still no confirmation as to whether the powercut at Victoria Park has been resolved, but the game is still continuing indefinitely, with Hartlepool having the best of the early possession in a scrappy game but failing to truly stretch Sheffield United.

2009: It's a super header from Michael Richardson and Leyton Orient are 1-0 up against Southend. Ramon Nunez, by the way, has just missed a sitter - a back-post volley - for Leeds, blazing over the Bradford bar from six yards out. Oops.

2007: I missed one! Emile Sinclair put Macclesfield ahead against Hull a couple of minutes ago. We're level at Spotland as Ashley Grimes makes it Rochdale 1-1 Chesterfield. Rotherham threatening a second against Leicester, meanwhile - potential upset?

2005: First blood to County against Nottingham rivals Forest as Mike Edwards sweeps home from a scramble. Deserved lead, that. Steve de Ridder puts Southampton ahead against Torquay, meanwhile, only moments before Lee Mansell equalises. Quickfire. David Ball has bagged to make it Stevenage 0-1 Peterborough.

2002: Deadlock broken at Home Park as Dany N'Guessan makes it Plymouth 0-1 Millwall. Own goal gets his second of the night - Matt Mills the culprit this time - and it's Rotherham 1-0 Leicester. Marvin attack! Goals from Marvin Morgan and Marvin Emnes make it Derby 0-1 Shrewsbury and Walsall 0-1 Middlesbrough.

2000: Crewe are level at Deepdale as Shaun Miller lashes home from the angle at the second attempt to make it 1-1 against Preston - decent counter-attack, that.

1958: Something! Happened! Adam Chambers has been sent off for Walsall against Middlesbrough - straight red, no arguments - while Danny Whitaker has given Chesterfield the lead at Rochdale with an 18-yard shot. A super strike from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has given Ipswich the advantage against Northampton. It's double delight for Wycombe as Joel Grant gives them a 2-0 lead against Colchester.

1955: Bit low on goals so far isn't it? Lee Hughes has just had a fine header turned around the Nottm Forest post for Notts County, while Gillingham are having the best of it so far against former tenants Brighton.

1952: Scott Donnelly side-foots the opener to make it Wycombe 1-0 Colchester and Doncaster are ahead against Tranmere thanks to a penalty from home debutant Chris Brown. Bright starts from Notts County and Leeds in the two derbies of the evening.

1949: First goal of the night as Matt Tootle turns Jamie Proctor's header into his own net to put Preston ahead against Crewe.

1948: Brilliantly, Hartlepool-Sheffield United has kicked off despite that earlier shortcut. There is no electricity available at the ground but the managers have decided to go ahead with the game in the hope they can finish it without the need for floodlights. Wowzers.

1946: Here we go then... Leeds-Bradford is under way, shortly to be followed by our other 27 matches. Wish me luck yeah?

JacobPWard on Twitter: "Leeds to make up for the embarrassment against Southampton tonight with a win against their rivals... I hope so!"

1943: No news so far - fingers crossed - of any disturbances around the grounds tonight. We can but hope that holds. Looks also like the majority of teams are fielding more or less their best available XI's tonight, too. Which is nice.

1939: There's no way I can keep you across all the team news tonight, but here's a nice little tit-bit - Nolberto Solano is in line to make his competitive home debut for Hartlepool against Sheffield United tonight, the club where the Peruvian had a trial back in January 2010 - and was rejected. Revenge mission?

FootieInAmerica on Twitter: "Unspeakably happy that BBC Football live chat is back. It's been a missing part of my life."

Karl, Derby via text: "Can you give a shout out for Mason Bennett? Just turned 15 last month, on the bench for the Rams tonight."

GabrielOguda on Twitter: "From far-away KENYA, keenly following Southampton v Torquay for local boy Taiwo Atieno. Come on you GULLS...!"

1934: By the way, Hartlepool v Sheffield United was due to start at 1930 but has been put back to 1945 due to a powercut. It is literally all happening.

1930: An exceptionally cheeky refresh will see BBC's Midweek Final Score appear magically* at the top of this very page. Happy days.
* Not actual magic

shivamLM on Twitter: "Really hope Bradford win, purely because Guy Branston replied on Fletch's blog about him!"

Jake via text: "Birmingham to defend their title? Anyone or just me?"

1928: Which leaves us with this bevvy of beauties...

PaulNicholsNffc on Twitter: "Lots of tweets about Forest tonight I'll be updating the BBC page every thirty seconds YOU REDS!"

Anon via text: "I'm glad the football season is back - my hope this year is that Cheltenham get a cupset for the first time in ages. I'd prefer us to beat a Premier League team first but MK Dons will have to do for the time being..."

1920: You still shouldn't won't miss a darn thing right here, though, I hope - and if you do I'm sure you'll let me know. It's might be a new season but it's 'same ol' same ol'' when it comes to getting in touch - so Tweet the commentary via the hashtag #BBCFootball, Tweet me @sampatricklyon or text in via 81111 (UK). It really is that easy.

1915: There is, however, something of a proviso - with 28 matches going on simultaneously, limited TV and radio access and only two hands on which to bash out these here updates, I'll only be able to bring you the key scorelines, incidents and stories as they happen, as opposed to every single spit, cough and swallow. Apologies in advance - despite my other-worldly appearance, I am but human.

1910: What have we got then? Well there's a couple of stonking derbies in Nottingham Forest v Notts County and Leeds v Bradford, involvement from the likes of Brighton, Ipswich, Millwall and Leicester, the possibility of a shock or three I'm sure - and plenty more besides. It's a night for staying in with myself and some footy, for sure.

1905: Four first-round ties may have been forced off because of the series of riots that are sweeping the country, but - as it stands, at least - 28 ties remain. And you know what? There are some crackers in there. Our mood may be more sour than Victor Meldrew sucking on a lemon but who wouldn't be cheered by the return - finally - of some competitive football? My word it has felt like a long summer.

1900: Right then. Forget the madness - let us bury ourselves in the very welcome distraction that is Carling Cup football, yes? Good.
