2237: That's all I've got time for, I'm afraid. I hope you enjoyed the game at Wembley tonight - I know I did. Not often you can say that about an international friendly, is it? Northern Ireland's draw was not such good news but they remain right in the mix for a place at Poland/Ukraine when Euro 2012 qualifying resumes in June. What next? The return of the Premier League of course... join Sam Lyon for that on Saturday, and I will see you all very soon.

From Mark in London, via text: "Re 2228. If I had a pound for everytime I heard that... "

FULL-TIME Republic of Ireland 2-3 Uruguay
John Haughey reports: "The World Cup semi-finalists hold on to beat the battling Republic second-string. Andy Keogh will wonder how he missed the late chance to equalise but Giovanni Trapattoni will doubtless regard the encounter as a useful exercise."

FULL-TIME Northern Ireland 0-0 Slovenia
Lyle Jackson reports: "Deprived of key players like Steve Davis, Aaron Hughes and Kyle Lafferty, the home side failed to take hold of a game they badly needed to win."

FULL-TIME England 1-0 Ghana
Chief football writer Phil McNultyreports from Wembley: "Ghana fully deserved that equaliser - and no-one more than Asamoah Gyan. Thoroughly enjoyable night at Wembley enhanced by Ghana's support. England coach Fabio Capello will take positives too from Andy Carroll's goal and good performances from Ashley Young and Stewart Downing."

2230: Almost time to bid you farewell. Before I do, here is how our reporters saw tonight's action...

2228: Some bad news for Arsenal fans... apparently Robin van Persie suffered a knee injury in the Netherlands' 5-3 win over Hungary tonight, although reports suggest he walked, rather than was carried, off the pitch.

2222: Er, I've just caught a glimpse of some highlights of France's 0-0 draw with Croatia. The French kit, seemingly modelled on a Breton shirt, is truly staggering. All their players need is a beret, a bike, and a string of onions to complete the look.

England winger Stewart Downing, who played 90 minutes at Wembley: "We did deserve better. We played good stuff, especially in the first half. They were lucky to get the equaliser. Tonight we proved we have strength in depth. Coming off a good performance on Saturday we had to proved we could do it again. If some of the fringe players can come in and do a job then we'll be picked more often."

More from England manager Fabio Capello following his side's entertaining draw with Ghana: "The two teams on the pitch were really, really good. The players were strong in the tackle. I'm happy with the performance of the squad. The players played without fear and with confidence. The players were selected for the match because I think they're really good players. I now understand that the players picked can play."

From Fitchspur, via text: "Just on my way back from Wembley, usually I'd be disappointed after conceding that late but seeing how much it meant to all those Ghana fans somehow made it better."

2210: That England-Ghana game was good enough to put a smile on the face of Fabio Capello, who was positively bubbly in his post-match interview even after Asamoah Gyan's last-gasp leveller for Ghana. "It was a fantastic game," said Capello. "I am happy because Ghana didn't play it like a friendly."

England goalscorer Andy Carroll after an eventful 1-1 friendly draw with Ghana: "It's great to be playing again and to have scored a goal. I enjoyed playing in the 4-3-3 formation. I'm here and ready to score goals if picked."

Former England boss Graham Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live: "If there's any way of being forgiven for missing a penalty in the World Cup, it's scoring the equaliser against England at Wembley. Well done Asamoah Gyan."

From Michael in London, via text: "Note to the FA. Please make this an annual fixture! Was a joy being there tonight. Atmosphere and football was fantastic. Ghana fans - wonderfully bonkers!"

OptaJoe on Twitter: "6 - Asamoah Gyan had twice as many shots v England this evening than the entire Wales team managed on Saturday. Relentless."

Northern Ireland striker Warren Feeney after his side's disappointing 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Group C of qualifying for Euro 2012: "A draw was a fair result. We have only been beaten once in the group and are not out of it. There are going to be a few teams fighting for second place."

2200: And, yes, John Pantsil did do his customary lap of honour with the Ghana flag as well.

2159: The Ghana players like a celebration or two as well, don't they? They are still on the Wembley pitch having a bit of a boogie. Their fans are still making one heck of a din too... I don't think they want to leave anytime soon.

scrgrl606 on Twitter: "Glad Ghana got the goal, it's a friendly and they really deserve something out of the game! well done Gyan."

Pengumile on Twitter: "1-1 is the perfect result to a brilliant game. Both teams played great. 4-3-3 is the way to go for Capello."

2155: Did I mention that the 20,000 Ghana fans went crazy when Asamoah Gyan equalised? No matter, they are still going wild now. It has been quite a night at Wembley... definitely a friendly to remember, and a draw is a fair result.

Full time
2153: FULL-TIME England 1-1 Ghana

2153: There will be three minutes of added time in total, and they are almost up...

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Ghana goal: It comes in the 91st minute but Ghana are level, and Asamoah Gyan has the goal his performance deserves. Gyan weaves past Joleon Lescott on the edge of the area and has space to curl the ball past Joe Hart. A strike of real quality.

2151: GOALFLASH England 1-1 Ghana (Gyan)

2149: Matt Jarvis has not exactly seen much of the ball since coming on but he has not wasted it when he has had possession. This time he feeds James Milner on the overlap, but his cross is charged down. We are into the 90th minute, and England lead Ghana 1-0.

2148: A disappointing night for Northern Ireland then, as they drop two precious points in their Euro 2012 campaign. They badly needed to beat Slovenia at home to boost their chances of finishing second behind Italy in Group C... so a draw is not really good enough.

2146: Leighton Baines delivers a dangerous low cross that Danny Welbeck is unlucky not to get on the end of, but Ghana are soon back on the attack. It's still very fast and frantic from the visitors but they need to find an end product to match.

2144: Fair to say that Asamoah Gyan has been all action tonight, and he is still looking for that Ghana leveller. This time he charges down a Joe Hart clearance from a backpass and sees the ball fly over the bar. Ghana have made another change too, with Samuel Inkoom on for Kwadwo Asamoah.

2142: Gareth Barry is captain tonight, so he is already having an evening to remember. Can he cap it with an overhead kick? Erm, no. Barry swivels to get on the end of Stewart Downing's cross but does not make proper contact and the ball rolls harmlessly wide.

2140: Another change by Fabio Capello. Danny Welbeck is on, for Ashley Young. It is Welbeck's senior debut... and it is greeted by jeers by the Ghana fans because he is qualified to play for the African side and turned them down to play for England. Still, this is only a friendly so he can still play for Ghana in the future under Fifa's rules.

Football League Macca: "Not long left in the seven Football League games and Port Vale look like climbing into the play-off spots after turning things round at home to Lincoln. Exeter lead against Swindon through a late penalty, Rochdale look like sealing all three points as they are 2-0 up against Charlton, while Brentford are 3-1 up at Sheff Wed."

Full time
2139: FULL-TIME Republic of Ireland 2-3 Uruguay

2139: FULL-TIME Northern Ireland 0-0 Slovenia

International football Macca: "After a brief wobble Spain have accelerated into a 3-1 lead at Lithuania through Juan Mata and are heading towards a fifth straight Group I win. The 10 men of Italy also look like emerging victorious as they lead 2-0 in Ukraine. Australia have held on to take the notable scalp of a 2-1 win in Germany."

2137: The goals dried up at the Aviva Stadium in the end too. Keiren Westwood keptthe Republic in the game with a brilliant double save to deny Edison Cavani and Alvaro Hernandez before the latter blazed over in the 70th minute after the Irish defence is again cut open. Then Andy Keogh missed a glorious chance to level on 80 minutes as he contrives to head wide from two yards out with the goal gaping after Fernando Muslera again flaps hopelessly at a cross. Uruguay 3-2 up.

2136: After a ridiculously long delay while the referee sorts out some pushing and shoving in the England wall, Asamoah Gyan steps up to bend the ball about a mile over the bar. Not worth the wait. England still lead 1-0, with 15 minutes left.

2135: Into injury time at Windsor Park. Chances at both ends to tell you about too. For Northern Ireland, Chris Brunt just failed to get the telling touch from Corry Evans' ball across the face of goal. Then, for Slovenia, substitute Zlatko Dedic is denied by a good save by Lee Camp.

Yellow card
2133: More Ghana pressure, and James Milner goes in the book for a foul on Asamoah Gyan. The African side have a free-kick about 25 yards out - this is dangerous.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Wembley: "Not quite as eventful as the first half but still wide open - and one of the highlights of the evening has been the Ghana support inside Wembley. Andy Carroll looked short of full match fitness before departing, but he and Fabio Capello will happily settle for that first England goal."

International football Macca: "All over in Amsterdam as the Dutch secure a 5-3 win over Hungary, who have better memories of that scoreline. Estonia have levelled at home to Serbia. If Northern Ireland can grab a late winner then the Group C table will look very tidy for them this evening."

2129: Here's the moment you Wolves fans have been waiting for - Matt Jarvis is on, replacing Jack Wilshere. And Ghana have made another change too: Prince Tagoe is on for Dominic Adiyiah.

2128: Ghana are still right in this game, mind. It could be 1-1... it probably should be. Asamoah Gyan beats the offside trap and is in acres of space inside the area... but flashes his shot wide.

2125: So, 25 minutes left at Wembley and England still lead Ghana 1-0. Gary Cahill has just had a half-chance of extending that lead after visiting keeper Richard Kingson gave away a needless corner. Cahill beat Jonathan Mensah to the cross, but his header bounced off the defender and wide.

Former England boss Graham Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live: "I think Ghana have had the better of the second half and have looked more dangerous, but personally I don't like to see all the substitutions because it makes it messy and ruins the quality of the game."

Yellow card
2123: Another booking for Ghana. Andre Ayew is a bit too eager to chase down Gary Cahill and keep England under pressure, and sends the England defender tumbling.

Yellow card
2121: A first yellow card at Wembley, where Jonathan Mensah catches James Milner with a high boot. Milner gets up and gets on the end of the resulting free-kick, forcing Richard Kingson into a diving save to push the ball away. A decent stop, that.

International football Macca: "It's even livelier in Amsterdam. They've just gone gooooal crazy, for sure. Ruuuud van Nistelrooy gave the Dutch a 3-2 lead, Zoltan Gera got his second to level but old Dirk Kuyt put the hosts 4-3 and then 5-3 up. Less than 10 minutes to go in that one. Meanwhile, Lithuania pegged back all-conquering Spain in Group I but a Tadas Kijanskas own goal has just put the Spaniards 2-1 ahead. Oh and Australia have scored twice in three minutes to lead Germany 2-1 in a friendly international, ex-Bristol City man Luke Wilkshire edging the Aussies ahead."

2119: A change apiece at Wembley. Jermain Defoe replaces England goalscorer Andy Carroll. Andre Ayew is on for Sulley Muntari for Ghana.

2117: Sulley Muntari fires in a dangerous free-kick from the right after Joleon Lescott concedes a foul, and England cannot clear their lines. A sustained period of pressure sees John Pantil's shot deflected an inch or two over by Gareth Barry and Jonathan Mensah heads wastefully wide from the resulting corner. England breathe again.

2116: Real pace by Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who runs straight at the heart of the England defence and bursts into the area. Gary Cahill, quietly impressive at the back so far, is wise to the danger, however, and steps in to stop him in his tracks.

2115: More from Windsor Park. Millwall striker Josh McQuoid comes on for his competitive debut, replacing Grant McCann in the Northern Ireland team.

2114: Twenty minutes left at Windsor Park, where it is still goalless. Northern Ireland just had their best attempt so far - skipper Gareth McAuley's header was cleared off the line by Slovenia's Matej Mavric.

2113: There have been a few meaty challenges in this half, notably by Ghana, so maybe it's time for referee Cuneyt Cakir to get to grips with it. Both sides are looking to attack whenever they get the ball, mind, so maybe I should quit complaining?

2111: Sulley Muntari (yep, him again) gets a sight of goal when Ghana take a free-kick quickly. He seems to slip as he shoots, however, and sends the ball a mile wide of Joe Hart's goal. Still no sign of the African side sitting back.

Football League Macca: "L1 leaders Brighton have finally broken Dagenham's resistance as free-scoring forward Glenn Murray grabs his 20th of the league campaign. Yeovil are beating Carlisle, while in L2 Port Vale have levelled against Lincoln and Shrewsbury have a third at Rotherham."

2109: Sulley Muntari catches Stewart Downing with a late challenge... not much in the tackle but Downing landed awkwardly, and looked in real pain for a moment or two. He is back on his feet now, though.

2108: Here's those Ghana changes. Jonathan Mensah, Daniel Opare and Derek Boateng came on for Isaac Vorsah, Lee Addy and Anthony Annan.

2107: An early sniff for England. Ashley Young has another pop from the edge of the box, but his shot does not trouble Richard Kingson.

2106: A bit of a reshuffle at half-time for England. Joleon Lescott is on for Glen Johnson. Lescott will play at centre-back and Phil Jagielka will go to right-back. Ghana have made three changes... details on those to follow.

2103: It has not been dull at the Aviva Stadium, though. Shane Long wastes a chance to level for the Republic of Ireland by blazing over after Fernando Muslera fails to hold Andy Keogh's swerving effort.

From anon, via text: "Best match and atmosphere I have seen at Wembley and performance from both squads. What will those players released think... "

2059: It has not exactly been thrill-a-minute at Windsor Park, but Milivoje Novakovic has just sliced best chance of the match wide for Slovenia - 10 minutes gone in the second half there.

2058: Hmmm, It did look like a foul by Andy Carroll you know. He gives a Ghana defender a good shove before turning to latch on to Stewart Downing's lay-off. Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir had a good view of of it too.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Rep of Ireland goal: The Republic win a penalty three minutes into the second half after Martin Caceres fouls James McCarthy and Keith Fahey slots the spot-kick to reduce Uruguay's lead.

International football Macca: Hungary's lead didn't last long as Wesley Sneijder has levelled for the Dutch, who have won all five of their Euro 2012 qualifiers to date. 2-2 now with 30 minutes to go.

International football Macca: "Interesting goings on in Amsterdam as Hungary are leading 2-1 against the Group E-leading Dutch. Fulham's Zoltan Gera put the Hungary boys ahead. In Scotland's group, Spain lead 1-0 at Lithuania (good) through Xavi at half-time, but earlier Czech Republic beat Liechenstein 2-0 (bad). In Northern Ireland's group, Serbia are beating Estonia 1-0 in a battle of the two teams above them."

2054: I'd like to claim some credit for Andy Carroll's goal with my entry at 2043. If he had read it, he reacted in exactly the right way... ahem. Anyway, there is talk amongst you lot that Carroll fouled a defender in the build-up to his strike. Let's wait for the replays, shall we?

2051: GOALFLASH Republic of Ireland 2-3 Uruguay (Keith Fahey pen)

Half time
HALF-TIME England 1-0 Ghana
Phil McNulty'sHT snapshot from Wembley: "Andy Carroll's goal for England rounded off an entertaining first 45 minutes, which had a really positive contribution from Ghana. Doubt very much that the Wembley crowd will feel cheated by what they have seen."

2050: The half-time whistle goes at Wembley. Not been a bad game so far, has it?

2049: Northern Ireland-Slovenia and Rep of Ireland-Uruguay are back under way.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
England goal: Pick that one out! After a neat build-up that sees Ashley Young find Stewart Downing with a clipped ball into the box, Andy Carroll meets Downing's lay-off with a bullet strike into the bottom corner that left Richard Kingson with absolutely no chance. That was some strike.

2046: GOALFLASH England 1-0 Ghana (Carroll)

Half time
HALF-TIME Republic of Ireland 1-3 Uruguay
John Haughey's HT snapshot "Uruguay are performing an accomplished smash-and-grab raid at the Aviva Stadium. Giovanni Trapattoni's more attacking formation is struggling but the manager may perhaps be feeling a tad vindicated after all the media criticism of his team's recent cautious displays."

jnoden on Twitter: "This England match has the feel of a World Cup game, Atmosphere, noise and some tidy football too. Players are staking a claim."

2043: Fair to say England have been quite impressive going forwards so far, apart from Andy Carroll. When the ball has been crossed high into the Ghana box (which hasn't been often), he hasn't really got near it.

2043: A real no-holds-barred challenge by Leighton Baines and Isaac Vorsah, who slide into each other at around 100mph as they go for a loose ball. Luckily, they can both walk away, but that could have been nasty.

Half time
HALF-TIME Northern Ireland 0-0 Slovenia
Lyle Jackson's HT snapshot: "Half-time at Windsor Park and former Northern Ireland defender John O'Neill is not impressed on Radio Ulster, saying: "It has been a terrible game." It's 0-0 and Northern Ireland, at home in a match they need to win, have to show more adventure."

2038: The 20,000 Ghana fans at Wembely make an incredible racket whenever the ball goes into England's half... not sure what will happen if the visitors score. That could happen, too, because Asamoah Gyan is seeing plenty of the ball. Real danger for England.

Football League Macca: "The half-time whistles are being blown in the seven Footy League games. Rochdale go into the break 1-0 up against Charlton - a result that would boost their hopes of squeezing into those play-off spots. Shrewsbury have dreams of an automatic promotion slot in L2 and they are 2-0 up at Rotherham - a result that would move them into third."

Former England boss Graham Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live: "If this is the England reserve team, they're doing pretty well. The formation is working because there is a lot of movement and interchanging, as we've seen so far especially with Ashley Young. It'll help to have a squad of 20-odd who are all comfortable with this formation."

2036: England get lucky. Joe Hart gives the ball straight to Asomoah Gyan on the left when he tries to play the ball short, but he cannot find Sulley Muntari with his cross... and Muntari fouls Gareth Barry as he tries to tackle him.

2035: Still end-to-end stuff at Wembley - this time Stewart Downing curls a free-kick on to the roof of Richard Kingson's net. Half-an-hour gone there, but it is half-time in Belfast and Dublin.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Uruguay goal: Alvaro Hernandez extends Uruguay's lead in the 39th minute after Alvaro Pereira dispossesses Liam Lawrence in midfield before finding a chargin Maxi Pereira who sets up the goalscorer for a simple finish. The Republic defence is looking all at sea.

2031: Ghana's turn to go close. Sulley Muntari whips in a free-kick from the left, and Dominic Adiyah gets on the end of it at the back post to force a fine reflex stop from Joe Hart.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Wembley: "Ashley Young is England's biggest threat again, forcing a fine save from Richard Kingson and hitting the bar when he should have scored. Ghana not shy about getting forward either. Good atmosphere and a very good game."

Someone has struck the woodwork
2030: Er, I am not really sure how that did not go in. James Milner sends in an inviting low cross from the right, but Ashley Young somehow manages to smash the ball against the bar from six yards out, and Andy Carroll is just unable to reach the rebound. An incredible miss.

2027: You have to love Asamoah Gyan's style. He is 40 yards out when he lets fly... and gets plenty of power behind his shot, but it is straight at Joe Hart.

2027: GOALFLASH Republic of Ireland 1-3 Uruguay (Abel Hernandez)

2025: Yep, Stewart Downing is a left-footed player, operating on the right - been a while since that happened for England... Chris Waddle? Or maybe, a little more recently, Adam Johnson?

From Dave C, via text: "Anyone noticed how many left-footed England players we have on the pitch. Must be a first!!"

2021: Ghana's Sunderland midfielder Sulley Muntari blasts a free-kick over Joe Hart's bar, from about 25 yards out - I was expecting a bit more from him there. Around 20 minutes gone, and very entertaining stuff so far at Wembley... in fact, all we are missing is a goal.

Former England boss Graham Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live: "Ghana are matching themselves up to England's 4-3-3 formation, but they are very square at times and England are getting an awful lot of opportunities in front of goal."

2019: A great tempo to this game. Ghana certainly aren't playing as if they are short of energy, and Gary Cahill had to nip in to make a timely challenge on Kwadwo Asamoah as he made for goal. At the other end, Ashely Young, who clearly has brought his shooting boots with him tonight, brings a spectacular save from Richard Kingson with a rasping shot that is heading into the top corner.

Football League Macca: It's been a lively start at Hillsborough, where Sheff Wed are looking for a first league win at home since 11 December. They're clearly not looking very hard because Brentford are 2-1 up after 18 minutes in the only League One tie to have experienced any goals. Both L2 games are off the mark: Lincoln are winning at Port Vale and Shrewsbury ahead at Rotherham.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Uruguay goal: Uruguay take lead again at the Aviva Stadium on 22 minutes as Maxi Pereira is allowed to cut inside from the right touchline before delivering a pinpoint pass to Edison Cavani, who expertly beats Kieren Westwood with a curling finish.

2016: England's turn to break forward. Jack Wilshere's precision pass releases Stewart Downing down the right and he surges into the area. Sadly for England, he has to use his right foot to shoot, and he slices it wide of Richard Kingson's near post.

2015: GOALFLASH Republic of Ireland 1-2 Uruguay (Edinson Cavani)

2014: England are continuing to use all their width, though and Stewart Downing sends over a low cross from the right that gives John Pantsil a few problems as he clears it. A wide open start to this game.

2011: But Ghana create the first clear-cut chance. Dominic Adjei runs on to a ball over the top, and he is clean through... but rather scuffs his shot, and it is straight at Joe Hart too. A waste, but a real warning for England, that.

2009: Still, a decent start by England. Glen Johnson has already got forward to send over a (poor) cross and Jack Wilshere has also fired in a shot from a corner. Fabio Capello's men are looking very neat and tidy in midfield.

2006: Ouch. Lee Addy goes straight through the back of Stewart Downing, If this wasn't a friendly, that would have been a booking.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Uruguay/Rep of Ireland goals: After Alvaro Hernandez blazes over an early Uruguay chance and keeper Fernando Muslera almost gifts Keith Fahey a goal at the other end, the visitors do take the lead on 12 minutes with captain Diego Lugano hitting the net from close range after sloppy home defending. But the Republic are level within three minutes as Shane Long heads in a superb Liam Lawrence cross. A lively start at the Aviva Stadium.

2004: GOALFLASH Republic of Ireland 1-1 Uruguay (Long)

Whistle
2004: Here we go. England get us started at Wembley, slightly later than planned because of a problem with Sulley Montari's boots.

2001: Just a reminder of how you can get in touch this evening. I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc using the hashtag #BBCFootball please. Or text me via 81111 (UK) instead. Got that? Good.

2000: GOALFLASH Republic of Ireland 0-1 Uruguay (Diego Lugano)

1958: It is not all one-way traffic at Windsor Park, where Northern Ireland are seeing a lot more of the ball, and in the Slovenia half too. At Wembley, it is currently anthem-time, which means kick-off is just a couple of minutes away.

1956: Actually, Ghana have just turned up... that was why we were waiting. Here come the players on to the pitch now, and the 20,000 Ghana fans at Wembley are going wild.

1953: The teams are in the tunnel at Wembley. Gareth Barry, captain for the night, is preparing to lead England out.

1952: Ghana played in the African Nations Cup qualifiers on Sunday against Congo (and won) by the way, so there might be a few tired legs out there at Wembley tonight. Anyway, over at Windsor Park, Lee Camp has had to deal with three decent shots in the first six minutes. Northern Ireland are under a bit of pressure already.

Former NI defender John O'Neill on BBC Radio Ulster: "If we are serious about claiming the second place in our group we need all three points tonight."

Whistle
1946: Northern Ireland's Euro 2012 qualifier with Slovenia, and the Republic of Ireland's friendly with Uruguay are both under way.

RobbieMathias on Twitter: "I am delighted (as, I'm sure, Andy Carroll is) we've gone for the two wingers tonight. Hope Jack Wilshere is let loose too."

1938: BREAKING GHANA TEAM NEWS
Black Stars coach Goran Stevanovic starts with eight of the team from that World Cup quarter-final, and all three of their Sunderland players feature - Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and John Mensah.

Rep of Ireland v Uruguay line-ups
Rep of Ireland: Westwood, Foley, O'Dea, Kelly, Clark, Lawrence, Green, Fahey, Keogh, McCarthy, Long. Subs: Randolph, Treacy, McGeady, Gibson, Delaney, Stokes, Forde.
Uruguay: Muslera, Lugano, Godin, Caceres, Maxi Pereira, Arevalo Rios, Perez, Pereira, Hernandez, Forlan, Cavani. Subs: Castillo, Fucile, Gargano, Eguren, Abreu, Gonzalez Luengo, Ramirez, Scotti, Fernandez.
Referee: Said Ennjimi (France)

1935: And it is appropriate to look back tonight too - and remember one of the pioneering black footballers on these shores. Before the game at Wembley gets under way there will be a ceremony to celebrate Arthur Wharton's legacy as the first black professional in world football. If you don't already know Wharton's incredible story following his arrival in England aged 19 in 1884, then you have got time before kick-off to read Matt Slater's excellent blog.

1933: Lots of people looking forward to the first ever meeting between England and Ghana. Jeanette Kwakye, the Team GB sprinter and Beijing 2008 100m finalist, has a strong Ghanaian heritage, with both her parents having been born there. Currently in Los Angeles training with Team GB, she tweeted earlier today: "I woke up from a dream that I was at Wembley. Gyan scored for Ghana and I started crying. Gutted that I can't be at home to watch."

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan on his penalty miss in last summer's World Cup quarter-final: "Sometimes I do sit down and think about it because it would have been the first time an African team had qualified for the semi-finals, and it didn't happen due to that incident. But we have got more years, I am so young. Sometimes, I do think about it - maybe at the next World Cup, we can do something more. The penalty is forgotten. I just said to myself, there are bigger players than me who have missed that kind of penalty - Roberto Baggio, Michel Platini, Maradona."

MattFunge91 on Twitter: "England to lose by two goals tonight. Not enough experience in the XI to match the World Cup quarter-finalists..."

Northern Ireland's Manchester United defender Jonny Evans on what reaching Poland/Ukraine would mean to him: "I think qualifying for a major tournament with Northern Ireland would sort of eclipse anything I could achieve with Manchester United, unless it was something like the treble, really cleaning up. Definitely, it's a harder task to qualify. I think it's harder to win the Premier League or the Champions League than it is to qualify for a major tournament with, say England. But I do believe it's harder for us to qualify for a big tournament than it would be for Manchester United to win the Champions League or the Premier League."

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND v URUGUAY TEAM NEWS
John Haughey reports: "Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni makes eight changes from Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifier win over Macedonia with senior players Richard Dunne, Kevin Kilbane, Damien Duff, Robbie Keane and injured Kevin Doyle all missing. Fulham's Stephen Kelly captains the Irish for the first time with Keith Fahey getting a chance to impress in central midfield alongside Paul Green and Shane Long a lone striker. Uruguay include Diego Forlan but Liverpool's Luis Suarez is an absentee."

NORTHERN IRELAND v SLOVENIA TEAM NEWS
Lyle Jackson reports: Oldham forward Warren Feeney is recalled as Northern Ireland's lone striker as Kyle Lafferty is injured and David Healy suspended after his booking in Friday's 2-1 defeat by Serbia. Motherwell's Stephen Craigan wins back his place in the NI defence as Aaron Hughes is ruled out by injury."

1923: You may not have noticed, but earlier on today there was a showdown between the hosts of the 2022 and 2018 World Cups, Qatar and Russia. Their friendly was played in Doha (presumably on an air-conditioned pitch at a disposable stadium played under artificial clouds?) Anyway, the game finished 1-1 with Andrey Arshavin setting up Roman Pavlyuchenko for the Russian's equaliser. The crowd? A bumper 9,500.

Former England boss Graham Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live: "I hope, I hope, I hope England play the 4-3-3 formation tonight. It will be a much harder test for them facing Ghana than it was against Wales on Saturday, and it will be really interesting to see these players in the new-look formation."

From Stuart in Preston, via text: "Games like this are very important for players such as Leighton Baines who has frozen a bit in the England matches he has played in so far. The more he plays the more comfortable he will become and more able to reproduce his outstanding club form if called upon for big competitive matches."

From Miles, Arsenal fan in London, via text: "Chris, on my way to Wembley to see the game tonight. Got a funny feeling about this one. Can see Ghana nicking a cheeky win with a host of injuries. I'm going 2-1 Ghana and Wilshere off on a stretcher."

Hmmm, I am sensing that Miles is a 'glass half-empty' kind of guy...

1916: England have never lost to African opposition but, if you read BBC Africa correspondent Piers Edwards' blog, you will find out there are countless Ghananians who will tell you that is only because they have never played Ghana before. "Who do we look out for in the Black Stars' squad?" I hear you ask... well, apart from Premier League stars like Sunderland duo Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari, try Partizan Belgrade pair Prince Tagoe and Dominic Adiyiah. Lots of quality there, and that unbeaten record is at real risk tonight.

Republic of Ireland fan albarr1978 on Twitter: "Looking forward to seeing James McCarthy tonight now that he is 100% our player - a weight off his young shoulders."

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND v URUGUAY (1945 BST)
John Haughey reports: "After yet more angst about the Republic's lack of creativity in central midfield following the stuttering win over Macedonia, Birmingham's Keith Fahey gets the chance to show that he could be the answer. With Darron Gibson and Glenn Whelan both left out, Fahey starts alongside Paul Green in the engine room with Wigan's James McCarthy along picked in midfield - ensuring that the long-standing issue of his Republic allegiances is now mercifully put to bed. Stephen Kelly captains the side with Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark getting a chance to impress on the left defensive flank. With the Celtic Tiger now a distant memory, cash-strapped fans have been giving the Aviva Stadium occasions a miss in recent matches and ticket sales for this match suggest that the Lansdowne roar could be muted again on Tuesday night."

NORTHERN IRELAND v SLOVENIA (1945 BST)
Lyle Jackson reports: "Northern Ireland will move above Slovenia into second place if they complete a Group C double over their opponents. A Corry Evans goal gave Nigel Worthington's victory in their opening qualifier in Moribor, but since then they have taken just two points from three matches. Boss Worthington says Northern Ireland are in the mix to finish second - but anything other than three points tonight would derail those ambitions. Slovenia, who qualified for the European Championships in 2000, share second spot with Serbia on six points having gone down 1-0 to group leaders Italy on Friday."

OptaJoe on Twitter: "19 - Since August 2009, only one player (Cesc Fabregas, 22) has assisted more Premier League goals than Leighton Baines. Option."

TheClapperBored on Twitter: "As a West Ham fan I'm delighted to see Scotty Parker left out of the starting line-up. Save him for the qualifiers Fabio..."

ENGLAND v GHANA TEAM NEWS
Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Wembley reports: "England's
team still has a strong appearance despite the expected seven changes - and it looks like Fabio Capello is sticking with the 4-3-3 system that served him so well against Wales. If all goes to plan Andy Carroll will not be short of service with plenty of width and the potential for quality supply in this starting line-up. Joe Hart, Glen Johnson, Jack Wilshere and Ashley Young survive from Cardiff, but West Ham's Scott Parker has been kept back as a precaution because of a calf strain."

1909: The last time many of you will have seen Ghana in action was in one of the most memorable games of the 2010 World Cup - their quarter-final defeat by Uruguay in a game full of pure sporting drama. Luiz Suarez handled on the line to stop the Black Stars winning the game deep in extra-time but Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty, and the South American side progressed after winning the shoot-out that followed shortly afterwards. If you are in the UK, then you can relive all the excitement here.

1905: BREAKING ENGLAND TEAM NEWS
As well as the names we knew were starting, Fabio Capello has gone with Jack Wilshere and James Milner alongside Gareth Barry in midfield, and Stewart Downing and Ashley Young as the two wingers in that 4-3-3 formation. Full line-ups to follow very shortly.

1903: As you have probably already heard, Fabio Capello is set to ring the changes following Saturday's convincing win over Wales. Captain John Terry is one of six players to have left the squad since Saturday's win over Wales, while Danny Welbeck has been called up and Andy Carroll, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill have been told they will all start at Wembley. Does it matter? BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty argues it doesn't. "It will be an England side with an experimental look, so some supporters may be disappointed, but it is dangerous to suggest Capello has somehow pulled the wool over their eyes by releasing players," he says. "This was always going to be a line-up with an unfamiliar feel."

ENGLAND v GHANA (2000 BST)
Chief football writer Phil McNulty at Wembley reports:
"Fabio Capello sends out a much-changed - and much-debated - England side to face Ghana at Wembley after accomplishing the main mission of beating Wales in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Cardiff. Still plenty of interest though against a gifted Ghana side that reached the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa. The spotlight will be on Capello's formation after the success of 4-3-3 in The Millennium Stadium and how Liverpool's £35m striker Andy Carroll fits in if he persists with it."

1859: Now you know what is happening, this is how you get in touch: I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc using the hashtag #BBCFootball please. Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington on his side's hopes of qualifying for Poland/Ukraine: "Italy are gone. They are top and there are three or four of us vying for second. I said at the start of the campaign, the chasing pack will take points off each other and that has been the case so far. "Sometimes there's a lucky strike where you can get through as a country of our size. Other times it can be ongoing hard work."

1853: There is plenty else going on too, with 10 other friendlies taking place, including the Republic of Ireland versus Uruguay, and 10 Euro 2012 qualfiers, with Northern Ireland the only home nation in competitve action. Nigel Worthington's men take on Slovenia, and are badly in need of a win in Belfast to boost their hopes of finishing second in Group C behind runaway leaders Italy. Domestically, there are a few games in League One and League Two too. In a word? Busy. Two words? Very busy.

1850: Yep, in the absence of John Terry, Wayne Rooney and co, England fans will get a chance to look at Andy Carroll up front, and a few other unfamilar faces too. We already know that Capello is not learning the lingo too quickly, but tonight might just provide him with a much more valuable English lesson - about the depth of his squad.

1845: Evening all. Half of his first-choice side are sitting at home on the sofa so, what can England boss Fabio Capello possibly garner from a friendly game with Ghana? Plenty, as it happens...
