Geoff Twentyman Talks Back - 11 November 2010

Albert Adomah
City signed Adomah from Barnet in the summer

Every now and again you meet someone in football who reminds you that it really still is a great game.

All too often recently the image of the game has been damaged by sordid tabloid headlines, an underperforming national side and stories of greed and public contractual negotiations where the figures equate more to overseas telephone numbers.

The man and woman in the street can not possibly relate to the gross earnings. For too many it is a reason to turn their backs on the game.

This week I met Bristol City's Albert Adomah for the first time. It was an uplifting experience. The 22-year-old's football CV has hitherto been modest.

After just over a hundred games at Barnet, Bristol City snapped him up in the summer months.

Adomah happy with goal tally

The winger has made an indelible impression on everyone - his manager, the coaching staff, his team mates, the fans and the media.

Up to now he's been an ever present and has chipped in with three goals as well as claiming an impressive number of assists.

I like his football ability, that's there for everyone to see. Adomah is a really endearing individual. He is a seriously modest guy and is simply delighted to be one of the 11 names on Keith Millen's team sheet.

He is thoroughly enjoying his ride on the crest of a wave. His eyes filled with pride and excitement as he told me playing against teams he used to watch on Match of the Day is 'quite pleasing.'

Apparently the other players are not huge fans of his music. Albert explains with a cheeky grin that is more of a reflection on their ages than his preferred iPod content.

He's not a shrinking violet of course and the Londoner who supports his local side QPR and Manchester United, has a sharp sense of humour. I am sure he can more than hold his own in the dressing room banter stakes. Apparently the other players are not huge fans of his music. Albert explains with a cheeky grin that is more of a reflection on their ages than his preferred iPod content.

Adomah is a football fan who loves playing football. He is a credit to his profession. I hope he reaches his target of 10 goals and more importantly I wish players in the Premier League could take a leaf out of his book.

Geoff Twentyman presents the Twentyman Talks Back football phone-in at 1900 GMT on Fridays on BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Somerset. If you missed the latest programme you can listen to it by clickinghere.
