Twentyman Talks Back: 23 April 2009

The last week or so has illustrated why football is such a unique game.

The exciting, the unexpected all rolled into one incredible portion.

It seems 4-4 draws are standard fare for Liverpool. Last week it was Chelsea and this week Arsenal.

Eight goals shared equally, twice in seven days - surreal.

So to Everton's heart-thumping stomach-churning FA Cup semi-final penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United.

This was not only a great result for the Merseysiders, it was the right result for football.

Judging by the team selections the competition and the occasion meant far more to David Moyes than it did to Sir Alex Ferguson. 'Fergie' might have bigger fish to fry but I believe the FA Cup remains a highly prestigious 'magical' competition.

Everton wanted the win more than United and a form of poetic justice was delivered.

It could have been Ron Davies, John Toshack, Joe Jordan or Didier Drogba - the technique could not have been any better

So to the my favourite piece of total drama and molten excitement.

The venue was Huish Park on Tuesday. Yeovil 1-2 Hereford. 96 minutes gone. Yeovil goalkeeper Chris Weale goes up for a corner and enters last-chance saloon. The keeper leaps high and bullets the ball into the back of the net. It could have been Ron Davies, John Toshack, Joe Jordan or Didier Drogba - the technique could not have been any better.

The celebration was fantastic as the keeper set a new personal best for a lap of Huish Park. The point is crucial as Yeovil battle to stay in League One.

Of course it set the mind racing. I have never played in or watched a game when a keeper scored but I am sure you have.

The list of goalscoring keepers over the years includes Alex Stepney, Pat Jennings, Jimmy Glass, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Robinson and Ray Cashley who once scored for Bristol City.

You may have your own favourite. If you actually research it fully you will be surprised by the number of goalscoring keepers there have been over the years.

Regardless, well done to Chris Weale it was a truly magical moment in a remarkable week of football.

Geoff presents the Twentyman Talks Back football phone-in at 1900 GMT on Fridays on BBC Radio Bristol and BBC Radio Somerset. If you missed the latest programme, listen to it now.
