North have won Guernsey's inaugural Senior County League Division One title after beating rivals Belgrave Wanderers 2-0 on Tuesday.

Island striker Simon Tostevin, who was an injury doubt prior to the game, opened the scoring after 20 minutes against the run of play.

North grew in confidence after the break and on 70 minutes Craig Young got the second to seal the title.

It is North's 29th island championship and they won the title by six points.

Around 400 fans packed the Track as they saw reigning champions Bels fail to convert their dominance into goals, which has been their problem in their last three games - all of which they have lost.

North boss Mick Le Prevost told BBC Guernsey: "This means absolutely everything. I love North football club and as the manager of the team I'm delighted but I'm also really pleased for the football club as well.

"We weathered the storm in the first half and scored a goal on the counter attack.

"They had to go out and try and get the three points, they had to attack and I knew that was going to happen. I knew they were going to keep pushing and pushing but we defended well and we worked so hard as a team," Le Prevost added.

North, who are by far the most successful club in island football history last won the title back in 2007, but before that went 15 years without a championship.

It means they will represent Guernsey in the Upton against the champions of Jersey, who are likely to be either reigning league winners St Paul's or Trinity.

North have not won an Upton since 1990 when they beat Jersey Wanderers 4-0 and lost to Jersey Scottish back in 2007.

"We lost out on it last time, we were 2-0 down and we came back to 2-2 and lost 3-2 so hopefully this time we can pick it up," Le Prevost said.
