Jason Roberts column
Wigan striker Jason Roberts
By Jason Roberts
Wigan striker

It's been pretty turbulent at Wigan since the end of the season dealing with the players who are being released or won't be here next season.

It feels a little like the break-up of the team that got us promoted and kept us up, but that's the nature of football.

As long as the club progresses, the manager and the fans will be happy. Wigan FC will be here long after the likes of Jason Roberts, Jimmy Bullard and Nathan Ellington have gone.

We've had a high turnover of players in the last couple of years but I don't suppose that's much of a problem for the fans as long as there's success on the field.

The nature of Pascal Chimbonda's transfer request prompted a lot of interest and I can understand there's a bit of discontent among the other players and fans.

I'm quite close to Pascal and I know he never meant to do it in the way it came across and with hindsight he wouldn't have done it like that.

Pascal is ambitious and wants to further his career and play at the highest level. After the season he had with us, I don't think anyone would begrudge him that.

He's taken a bit of stick for what he's done but people should remember that clubs move players on at their convenience and as a player you have to get on with that. When the boot's on the other foot, though, it appears to be unacceptable.

It would be a shame if Pascal's efforts in his time at Wigan were tainted by the way it's ended

It's sad to see the players leave, we're a pretty tight bunch here. It would be a shame if Pascal's efforts in his time at Wigan were tainted by the way it's ended.

Anyway, I'm leaving that behind now, I'm in holiday mode.

We had our last team meeting last week, and we don't report back for pre-season training until July.

I'm going back to Grenada for the summer to see my family and to be honest, when I'm on holiday I leave football far behind.

During the season when I'm at home, I'm a big football watcher, and look at every game I can on the TV.

But when I'm holiday I get away from it. I live, eat and sleep football for almost 10 months of the year and I think it's important to get away from the game and shut myself off from it completely.

I might keep an eye on the World Cup, but I won't be watching it avidly.

We all know what you can and can't do if you want to arrive back in shape to get stuck into the pre-season

I'll keep myself ticking over fitness-wise as well. I think players are much more professional now when it comes to keeping themselves in shape during the close season.

I've been involved in 10 pre-seasons and I don't think I've ever seen anyone come back after really letting themselves go during the summer.

Players realise this is their job and although we're given regimes and diet advice to take away with us for the summer we all know what you can and can't do if you want to arrive back in shape to get stuck into the pre-season.

For the time being this is my last column for the BBC.

I've thoroughly enjoyed it this season, and I hope you've enjoyed reading my thoughts.

From the feedback I've got, it looks like I've managed to bring you a few insights into the world of professional football.

So I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your interest.
