 | Nesta is one of the finest centre backs in the world |
Chelsea are claimed to be the mystery club behind the 35m bid for AC Milan centre-back Alessandro Nesta. The vice-president of the European champions, Adriano Galliani, said on Thursday he had rejected an offer of 50m euro from "an English club" for the Italian international.
Manchester United, following the sale of David Beckham to Real Madrid, would probably be capable of paying out such a fee, but now reports have suggested Chelsea are the bidders.
The Stamford Bridge club are said to have money to burn following the takeover by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
Italy international Nesta is regarded as one of the best central defenders in the world and Galliani insisted Milan had no intention of selling.
"There is no question of any of the first-choice 16 or 17 players being sold," he said.
Nesta joined Milan from Lazio before the start of last season for about 18m.
