| Wednesday, 4 December, 2002, 23:34 GMT Blackburn cruise past Rotherham ![]() Yorke scores to help dump Rotherham out of the cup Blackburn 4-0 Rotherham Worthington Cup holders Blackburn comfortably disposed of Rotherham in front of new signing Hakan Sukur. Sukur watched from the stands after completing his move to the Ewood Park club and saw Dwight Yorke open the scoring.
Andy Cole and Yorke extended Blackburn's lead before Damien Duff added a fourth before half-time. The tie was already beyond Rotherham's reach and the home side eased up as they eased into the fifth round. Sukur has been signed by Graeme Souness to add to his side's attacking potency but Yorke and Cole responded to the increased competition on their places in ideal fashion. Blackburn went ahead when winger Duff teased Chris Sedgwick wide on the left before delivering a cross to the edge of the six-yard box. Goal-line clearance Yorke was on hand to nod it into the corner past keeper Mike Pollitt before he almost turned provider in the 13th minute. Yorke's pass released fellow frontman Cole but he was forced too wide and his shot was easily gathered by Pollitt. Cole scored Rovers' second three minutes later after he latched on to another pass from Yorke and strode on to calmly slot in. Rotherham's hopes of pulling one back were denied when Richie Barker powerfully met a Darren Garner corner but saw his effort cleared off the goal-line by David Thompson. Thompson was then involved in Blackburn's third at the other end with his shot coming back off the woodwork before Yorke scuffed a shot into the net. Duff added a fourth for the home side when he was played through by Cole and, after seeing his first shot come back off the post, slot in from the rebound. Blackburn continued to control the game after the interval but Alan Lee sent a flying header over the crossbar in the 57th minute as the Millers desperately sought something from the game. Tugay has a shot tipped over for Blackburn but they had eased up and failed to add to their four-goal tally. Blackburn: Kelly, Neill, Johansson, Todd, McEveley, Thompson, Danns, Tugay, Duff, Yorke, Cole. Subs: Flitcroft, Grabbi, Gillespie, Ostenstad, Robinson. Rotherham: Pollitt, Scott, Swailes, McIntosh, Hurst, Sedgwick, Garner, Daws, Monkhouse, Richard Barker, Lee. Subs: Bryan, Robins, Warne, Talbot, Gray. Referee: M Messias (N Yorkshire) |
