England v Portugal | Villa Park | Saturday, 7 September kick-off 1600 BST | Live on BBC Radio Five Live and BBC Sport Online Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa has been called up by Portugal for the friendly against England. Sabrosa, who missed the World Cup through injury, has only recently returned to action following a four-month absence. Deportivo La Coruna defender Jorge Andrade was named in the 22-man squad by coach Agostinho Oliveira - but broke a foot on Saturday and has withdrawn from the squad. His place goes to Benfica's uncapped defender Joao Manuel Pinto. Fourteen of the original 22-man squad named by Oliveira played in the World Cup finals in which Portugal surprisingly failed to qualify for the second round. Portugal, who will host the European Championship in 2004, play England at Villa Park on 7 September. Squad Defenders: Nuno Valente, Paulo Ferreira (both Porto), Sergio Conceicao (Inter Milan), Fernando Couto (Lazio), Joao Manuel Pinto (Benfica), Beto Severo, Rui Jorge (both Sporting), Fernando Meira (Stuttgart). Midfielders: Rui Costa (AC Milan), Jorge Silva (Boavista), Francisco Costinha (Porto), Luis Vidigal (Napoli), Hugo Viana (Newcastle United), Armando Petit (Benfica). Forwards: Pedro Pauleta (Bordeaux), Nuno Capucho (Porto), Luis Boa Morte (Fulham), Luis Figo (Real Madrid), Nuno Gomes, Simnao Sabrosa (both Benfica). |
