Sloppy England beaten
Hope Powell, England's coach
Much to ponder for Hope Powell
England 0-1 Nigeria

Nigeria's women sneaked a narrow win at Carrow Road on Tuesday, taking advantage of some sloppy England finishing.

The visitors, who spent a fair portion of the match with just 10 players, scored the winner with less than 25 minutes remaining.

And in truth, their lead never looked like being overhauled after Patience Avre scored.

Nkiru Okosieme caught Rachel Unitt flat-footed and laid the ball off to Avre, who rifled the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Hope Powell's side will have to be far more clinical when they take on Iceland in their World Cup play-off in September, and the coach remained positive.

"I think they did very well in the first-half. From where I was sat it was good," said Powell.

"We tried to put into practice a few new things we have tried in training and I think that happened.

"The match also gave us an opportunity to try a few players."

Amanda Barr, Vicky Exley, Katie Chapman and Rachel Yankey all went close for the hosts during the first half.

The best England effort was from Kristy Moore, making her England debut after seven appearances for Australia, who was denied by the crossbar.

The second half was more of the same, with a handful of chances falling England's way before the visitors' winner in the 66th minute.

Nigeria found themselves down to 10 players when captain Florence Omagbemi was sent off for her second yellow bookable offence.

Powell admitted that England need to improve in front of goal.

"We scored four against Holland so no I'm not bothered," she said.

"We are missing Kelly Smith, which is a big hole to fill, and we've played the last two games and we haven't scored, so obviously it is something we need to look at."
