Fencer Caitlin Chang sets sights on London 2012

Fencing

North Yorkshire fencing star Caitlin Chang is setting her sights on a place in the London 2012 Olympic team.

The 17-year old from Harrogate is the British Under-17 champion and she said she wants to push on from here.

She told BBC Radio York: "There's an intake of four girls of my weapon and I'm competitive against them.

"I've beaten four of the people who they're thinking of taking but if I just keep doing my seniors and go up the rankings then hopefully I can go."

She added: "I'm hopeful but it is complicated."

Chang said she started fencing at seven years old and she has trained hard ever since as a member of Harrogate Fencing Club.

"I do one hour at my fencing club once a week because my club only opens once a week which is quite sad," he said.

"Most other clubs around the country open every day. But then I have an hour's private lesson sometimes twice a week. Then I fitness train every day for about an hour so it's quite a lot of hours.

"The social side is quite minimal but I do get to go out with my friends but there's not much of it. "

Chang expects to find out at the end of the 2011 season if she has been selected for the British Olympic squad.

"It would be amazing. Words can't describe how brilliant it would feel," she said.
