Gunn finished with bowling figures of 5-31 from her 10 overs |
Jenny Gunn starred with bat and ball as England beat New Zealand by six wickets at Derby to take a 2-1 lead in their one-day international series. Gunn ripped through the top and middle order to end with a career-best 5-31 as the tourists posted a total of 220-9. She then contributed an unbeaten 37 in a match-winning stand of 83 with Lydia Greenway (45 not out) after Sarah Taylor had led England's reply with 64. England can seal the series if they win Saturday's fourth match in Barnsley. "I can't believe the day I've had. It's been great - and I'm pleased my family were here to see it. "It was tough work, I never thought I'd get it [five wickets] because I haven't been bowling much recently," said Gunn, whose father Bryn was a member of Nottingham Forest's 1980 European Cup-winning squad. Of her partnership with Greenway, Gunn added: "Lydia is in great form at the moment, I enjoy batting with her. Duckworth-Lewis went out out of our minds and we just kept hitting the runs." New Zealand did well to reach 220 after stumbling to 108-6 after 32 overs, with captain Aimee Watkins hitting nine boundaries in her 68 off 65 balls. England made the perfect start to their run-chase as Taylor and Heather Knight shared an opening partnership of 108 in 26 overs. They eventually departed in the space of four overs and England suffered a second double-wobble when skipper Charlotte Edwards and Claire Taylor, their two most experienced batters, managed only seven and 11 respectively. At 140-4, they were in danger of wasting their opportunity, but Greenway and Gunn kept their heads and collected five fours each to see England home with eight balls to spare.
