Edwards could not match her score of 70 in the opening match |
New Zealand women tied the one-day series with England at 1-1 after beating the hosts by four wickets. England set a modest target of 208-9 thanks to Claire Taylor's 66 and Lydia Greenway's 40, but both were run out. An unbeaten 75 from the White Ferns' Suzie Bates helped New Zealand chalk up 211-6, despite figures of 3-24 from England's Laura Marsh. "We were 20 or 30 runs short with the bat," said England captain Charlotte Edwards, who scored only five. "We bowled well, but missed too many run-outs, which cost us in the end. It's one apiece, so we will look towards the next game at Derby now." Edwards could not match her score of 70 in the opening encounter of the five-match series, but openers Sarah Taylor (25) and Heather Knight (19) made a good start before their wickets were taken by Erin Bermingham. And although Taylor and Greenway established a decent score it was Bates who curtailed the England innings by taking 3-27 off seven overs in her player-of-the-match performance. The third one-day international will be played on Thursday 15 July, at the County Ground, Derby.
