Third Twenty20 international, St Kitts: England 120-4 (18.1 ovs) bt West Indies 119-6 (20 ovs) by six wickets Match scorecard
Gunn hit 35 from just 26 deliveries to give England the impetus |
Jenny Gunn led the way with the bat as England restored some pride in their lost series in the West Indies with a consolation six-wicket Twenty20 win. Danielle Hazzell took 3-27 and Isa Guha and Katherine Brunt shared four wickets as the Windies limped to 120-6 despite Pamela Lavine's 61 off 49 balls. And Gunn then fired 35 from 26 balls, including six fours, to help England to their target with 11 balls to spare. Captain Charlotte Edwards also chipped in with a tidy 29 from 20 balls. The victory in Basseterre came after defeats on Saturday and Monday which ensured West Indies won the series. The hosts, winning their third successive toss, opted to bat and Merissa Aguilleira was trapped leg before without scoring to Brunt with only her third ball. | We have been able to expose some of our younger players to a lot of international cricket in a short space of time England captain Charlotte Edwards |
The bowling of Holly Colvin and Guha restricted the West Indians' run rate but a partnership of 47 between Stacy Ann King and Lavine guided the total to 119. Edwards and Ebony Rainford-Brent began well for the tourists, reaching 49 in the sixth over, and with both soon in the pavilion, it was left to Gunn who did not disappoint with a dazzling 35. Caroline Atkins and Brunt then settled the nerves as England wrapped up their victory. The England skipper was pleased to see her side bounce back and end their trip on a positive note. "It's been a tough two weeks of cricket but it will be incredibly valuable moving forward," Edwards said. "We have been able to expose some of our younger players to a lot of international cricket in a short space of time. "I want to congratulate the West Indies, they outplayed us and deserved to win but we'll be back in May determined to retain the World Twenty20. This trip has been important as part of our preparations."
