First Twenty20 international, St Kitts: West Indies v England Match scorecard
Guha impressed with figures of 3-21 from her four overs |
England's women suffered a four-wicket defeat in the first match of their Twenty20 series against West Indies. After a three-hour rain delay in St Kitts, England struggled to 68-6 after the early loss of Danielle Hazell. But skipper Charlotte Edwards made 34 and Holly Colvin and Isa Guha steered the tourists to a total of 112-8. West Indies looked comfortable on 91-2, but three wickets from Guha set up a tense finish, with the home side securing victory with a ball to spare. Guha dismissed Pamela Lavine (26), Cordel Jack (39) and Stacy-Ann King (one), leaving West Indies needing 16 runs from 17 balls. When captain Merissa Aguilleira was run out for 13 while attempting an unlikely second run, home nerves were jangling despite only two runs being needed off the final three deliveries. But Shanel Daley kept her cool to hit the winning runs, giving West Indies a 1-0 lead in the three-match series - having already won the 50-over series by a 2-1 margin. England began badly, losing Hazell lbw for four to Stafanie Taylor (3-16) with the score on 18, and Jenny Gunn quickly followed for nine. | 606: DEBATE |
A 24-run stand between Beth Morgan (10) and Edwards took England beyond the 50 mark before Morgan was run out. The wickets of Caroline Atkins (nought), Katherine Brunt (four) and Edwards soon followed and it was left to Colvin, with an unbeaten 17, and Guha (13 not out) to play out the remainder of England's overs. Brunt (1-11) and Anya Shrubsole (1-33) bowled aggressively as West Indies began their reply and teenager Shrubsole took the wicket of Deandra Dottin with her first ball of the tour. The home side were struggling 22-2, but a third-wicket stand of 69 between 40-year-old Lavine and Jack took them to 91-2 and within sight of victory.
