Waugh said his bowlers gave all they had |
Australia captain Steve Waugh refused to blame his bowlers after West Indies hit a record fourth innings total to win the fourth Test by three wickets in Antigua.
The home side gained a consolation win by reaching a target of 418, breaking India's 27-year-old record.
"Four hundred would normally be enough to win so I've got no complaints there and no complaints about the way we bowled," Waugh said.
"We gave everything we had and the West Indies were too good for us."
However, Waugh admitted he had hoped to set a target closer to 500 after Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden put on 242 for the first wicket in the second innings.
Waugh himself was the only other batsman to pass 20 as the rest of the order subsided for 417.
It's a disappointing way for all the boys to end the tour |
Although he missed the final match, Ricky Ponting was named man of the series after scoring three centuries, totalling 523 runs, as Australia took a 3-0 series lead.
The Australia vice-captain paid tribute to an attack that clinched wins on three wickets that were widely criticised for being too flat and slow.
"Australia's bowlers did a fantastic job to take 20 wickets on each of those wickets," he said.
"The first three wickets were very good for batting and I made the most of those."
Ponting said he was feeling "a little better" after being ruled out of the match with a viral infection.
"It was very disappointing to miss the game," he added.
"It's a disappointing way for all the boys to end the tour."
Australia will have a chance for revenge, though, in the seven-match one-day series that begins in Jamaica on Saturday.
