Aussie openers pile on runs

Fourth Test, Antigua, day two: West Indies 240 v Australia 240 and 171-0

Justin Langer
Langer hit 12 fours in his unbeaten 80

Australia built a second innings lead of 171 on a fiery second day of the fourth Test after West Indies had matched the tourists' first innings score.

Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden put on a century partnership for the first wicket for the ninth time together and reached the close unbeaten on 80 and 79 respectively.

Earlier, the West Indies tail put up spirited resistance to ensure the hosts matched Australia's first innings total of 240 all out at tea.

Australia captain Steve Waugh and his West Indies counterpart Brian Lara were let off by the match referee following a heated exchange between the two during the second day's play.

Lara, who was batting, and Waugh were involved in a war of words during the first session of play before they were separated by English umpire David Shepherd.

Lara top-scored for the home side with 68, but was hampered by wickets falling regularly at the other end.

Having opened his account with a six over point off Brett Lee, Lara went on to add 12 fours before being eighth man out with his team still 43 behind.

Those runs were added for the final two wickets but Australia's strong start to their second innings swung the initiative back the tourists' way.

West Indies began on 47-2, having enjoyed an excellent opening day when paceman Jermaine Lawson was the star with figures of 7-78.

But Lee proved equally hard to handle and had Devon Smith caught behind for 37, before trapping night-watchman Vasbert Drakes lbw for 21.

Ramnaresh Sarwan helped Lara add 57 in 11 overs. but then gave a return catch to Andy Bichel after hitting five fours in his 24.

And there was further success for Australia three overs later when Glenn McGrath found a way through Shivnarine Chanderpaul's defences and bowled him for one.
