Dillon and Smith celebrate West Indies' win |
Brian Lara believes the West Indies are heading in the right direction after beating Australia in the final Test match of the series. The West Indies captain was delighted his team had achieved the highest-ever fourth innings total to win the fourth and final Test by three wickets in Antigua.
Australia won the Caribbean series 3-1 but Lara said West Indies could take a lot of positives from the Tests.
He said: "We set a standard and kept the standard up and ended with a victory over Australia. It was the greatest run chase in the history of the game.
"That is what we are going to take forward.
"We will look at how we competed against the best in the world.
"We are going to try and not go backwards at all. We are going to go forwards."
We knew the game would end in a result - we just had to make sure it ended in our favour. |
West Indies fielded an inexperienced side, which included 20-year-old spin bowling all-rounder Omari Banks and 21-year-old fast bowler Jermaine Lawson as well as young batsman Devon Smith.
Banks and veteran Vasbert Drakes guided the hosts to a record an historic victory on the final day's play.
Lara added: "It was a great team effort by all of us.
"We knew we had two days to get the score and we had seven players who had scored Test hundreds.
"We just looked at it very positively. We knew the game would end in a result. We just had to make sure it ended in our favour."
West Indies and Australia now play seven one-day internationals, starting in Jamaica in Saturday.
