Jayawardene has been outstanding since taking over the captaincy |
Mahela Jayawardene will continue as Sri Lanka's captain at least until the end of the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. Jayawardene, named captain of the year at Friday's ICC awards, stood in after Marvan Atapattu was injured in March.
His impressive performances in England and against South Africa at home saw him kept on for the Champions Trophy.
"Mahela has done a good job since taking over from Marvan and he will continue till the World Cup," chairman of selectors Ashantha de Mel explained.
"We are working towards the World Cup and we wanted to ensure that Mahela felt comfortable ahead of the tournament."
Jayawardene's run of scores as a batsman have improved considerably since he assumed the leadership, and he averages 62 in Test cricket and 46 in one-dayers as captain.
He also hit Test cricket's fourth highest individual score of 374 in July against the Proteas, as they won both matches in that series.
