Jayasuriya scored more than 6,600 Test runs for Sri Lanka

He will not be available for the first Test, starting at Lord's on Thursday, but is set to play at Edgbaston.

The 36-year-old retired last month but Sri Lanka's new chairman, Asantha De Mel, persuaded him to reconsider.

However, coach Tom Moody was unsure of the details and said: "I have not spoken to anyone about that."

De Mel said Jayasuriya had retired too early and had been forced out by former chief selector Lalith Kaluperuma.

Jayasuriya played 102 Tests and hit 6,613 runs at an average of 41.59.

His last appearance was the second Test against Pakistan in April where he dislocated his thumb.

De Mel claimed Jayasuriya was told to either go or be dropped adding: "The way it was done was absolutely ridiculous."

Moody will spend the intervening time ensuring his young batsmen retain their focus in the light of Jayasuriya's imminent return.

"They have the chance to make some headway as Sri Lanka batsmen," he said.

"They need to concentrate on that. There is no point looking over your shoulder, whether you are a senior player coming back into the side or a younger player knocking on the door it makes no difference, it is the same pressure.

"You have to perform on a regular basis and take the chances when they come."
