Pakistan suspend fine on Shoaib
Shoaib Akhtar and Geoff Lawson
Coach Geoff Lawson believes he knows how to handle Shoaib
The Pakistan Cricket Board has suspended a fine imposed on fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for leaving a training camp without telling the team manager.

The 32-year-old was fined 2,500 for leaving the training camp in Karachi earlier this month.

But Shoaib will not now have to pay it if he avoids disciplinary problems over the next six weeks.

"It is a big load off my mind. I don't like being charged with indiscipline when I have done nothing," he said.

"The episode disturbed me no end. Now I can focus on my game and play my part in the Twenty20 World Cup," he said.

Shoaib claimed he had informed team captain Shoaib Malik of his intention to leave the training camp because of a stiff neck.

He did not attend the initial hearing when the fine was imposed, but lodged an appeal on the grounds that he had not been notified about when it was taking place.

"Akhtar has been exonerated after a warning as he explained the entire incident was the result of miscommunication," manager Talat Ali said.

Shoaib has been named in Pakistan's 15-man squad for next month's tournament in South Africa, where they are in the same first round group as India and Scotland.

They are looking to atone for a dismal performance at the 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean this year when they were eliminated at the first round stage.

"It is very essential to have good results from the beginning. I want to see the team progressing with each event," new coach Geoff Lawson has commented.
