Hayden to miss Bangladesh series

Matthew Hayden
Hayden has been troubled by the injury for the last three months

Australia opener Matthew Hayden has been ruled out of the home one-day series against Bangladesh.

The 36-year-old has failed to recover from an Achilles tendon injury in time for the three-match series in Darwin, which begins on Saturday.

The selectors, however, have decided against naming a replacement.

Australia will also be without skipper Ricky Ponting (wrist injury) and pace bowler Brett Lee, who has been given time off after his marriage broke up.

But all three are expected to return for the tour to India in October.

606: DEBATE

When the squad to play Bangladesh was announced earlier this month, chief selector Andrew Hilditch acknowledged there was a chance Hayden would not be available.

"His progress has been monitored closely by our physiotherapist and doctor and his overall participation in the series will be determined as we get closer to the date," he said.

Shaun Marsh and Shane Watson are now likely to be the first-choice opening pair for Australia, with James Hopes providing a third option.

And even without Hayden, Ponting and Lee, they will still expect to beat Bangladesh, having whitewashed West Indies 5-0 in a one-day series in the Caribbean in June and July.

Australia squad: Michael Clarke (captain), Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Brett Geeves, Brad Haddin, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson, Cameron White.
