Clarke given Aussie skipper role

Michael Clarke
Clarke has an unbeaten record as Australia captain

Michael Clarke is to captain Australia for the one-day series against Bangladesh as Ricky Ponting continues his recovery from wrist surgery.

Clarke led Australia in two one-day internationals against the West Indies in July after Ponting returned home.

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been selected, despite breaking a finger, and opener Matthew Hayden, who has an Achilles tendon problem, is also in.

The series features three matches - on 30 August and 3/6 September in Darwin.

Australia's chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said: "While it is disappointing not to have Ricky Ponting available, we are confident that continuing his recovery and missing this series will assure Ricky is ready for the demanding cricket schedule ahead.

"Matthew Hayden has been selected in this side subject to fitness. His progress has been monitored closely by our physiotherapist and doctor and his overall participation in the series will be determined as we get closer to the date."

Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Ponting was making good progress.

"He is on track to be available for upcoming cricket," stated Kountouris.

"Matthew Hayden is also progressing well with his rehabilitation following an Achilles injury. His availability for the series will be determined over the next two weeks."

Australia: Michael Clarke (captain), Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson, Cameron White.
