Clark haul earns Ponting praise

Ricky Ponting's side take a 1-0 lead going into the second Test

Australia captain Ricky Ponting paid tribute to bowler Stuart Clark after his five-wicket haul helped secure victory over West Indies.

West Indies managed just 191, falling 95 runs short of their target with Clark and Brett Lee in impressive form.

"How could you not admire what he's done? He's averaged around 20 in 125 or so Test matches," said Ponting.

"That's a great achievement, especially when he hasn't bowled with the new ball on a lot of those occasions."

Ponting added: "He's been the guy a bit like Glenn (McGrath) was when he was in the side, whatever the situation required, you know that he'll come in and get the job done for you.

We've now shown ourselves the way to go about playing Test cricket again

"He'll give you what is expected and what the team requires."

Ponting's side now take a 1-0 series lead into the second Test in Antigua and he admitted to being pleased with how Australia went about their work in beating West Indies.

He said: "I think today we were just unrelenting. We didn't give them any opportunity to get themselves back in the game.

"That is great reinforcement for our group going in to the next game because the Antiguan wicket could be pretty slow and low going on the World Cup games that we've played there.

"So we've now shown ourselves the way to go about playing Test cricket again."

Clark added: "It's always nice to get a few wickets.

"It reinforces to me and all the bowlers that we can be successful on these types of wickets, we don't just need the pace and bounce of Australia."

It has made us realise that they are not superhuman, they can falter

West Indies coach John Dyson

West Indies coach John Dyson said his side had learnt the visitors were fallible.

"It has made us realise that they are human, they are not superhuman. They can falter," said Dyson, whose team had the tourists shaking at 18-5 in the second innings.

"If we can apply enough pressure at the right times and continue doing the good things that we can do, they might falter just enough to give us that opening.

606: DEBATE

"I think we will take away from the game a lot of positive things. That's what we've tried to do since the South Africa tour last year. You can't expect a team to turn around overnight and consistently win every game.

"We recognise that and that this series is against the strongest unit in the world. I think we have put on a pretty good show in this match. If we can just improve in a couple of areas, we will put on another good show in the second Test in Antigua."
