At least 12 cruise ships will be in Bridgetown harbour during next year's cricket World Cup final to help house the 30,000 visitors expected.

The final of the tournament is due to be played in Barbados, which is short of hotel rooms for fans.

A ministry of tourism spokesman said: "The number of rooms we really require for the World Cup is about 13,000.

"During 2004 and 2005, the room stock has grown by about 2,000 rooms, so we are about 10,000 right now."

The ministry insist that the shortfall will be made up by the cruise ships, as well as home-stay accommodation.

The Bajan government has allocated $2.5 million for home owners to improve their facilities to host visitors.
